TFA's Absinthe is one of very few flavors I like all by itself. FA's Anise is another. The two don't taste very different to me, though the Anise is a stronger concentrate. I'm sticking with Absinthe now because it contains no PG, and I'm trying to go PG-free.

Lots of 2-flavor blends have been good with Absinthe. I've liked it with peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen, or lime. I haven't liked it with berries, but I know that's a favorite of many.

I have three ideas to try soon: with coconut and vanilla, with ginger, and as a mandarin-chai-tea ingredient.

What do you mix with Absinthe or Anise? What's the wildest combination you've liked? Just looking for ideas here...

So Cal
Since I'm a huge fan of five pawns Absolute Pin, I'm going to try mixing it with TFAs Irish Cream, a tough of TFA cinnamon, and TFA caramel (original). I know it won't be like the real thing, because they extract their own flavors, but if it's anywhere in the ball park I'll be happy:

(ABSOLUTE PIN: Intense complexity of Irish cream, cinnamon spice, and caramel with subtle absinthe undertones. Lively and with a medium to full bodied throat hit.)

My favorite (at the moment) is Green Mamba (by going to the site it's easier to read than my copy/paste below):

We used TFA Watermelon and thought we were using TFAs Honeydew (originally purchased at VZ - non-concentrated line). But after reading that VZ rebrands from many vendors in that line, we ordered TFA's Honeydew (and it is nothing like VZ's - yet in a later email, VZ swears it's TFA :::eyeroll NOT:::). But wethinks any 'tried n' true' Honeydew would work. We used 7% Absinthe; 1% Anise FA; 2.5% Honeydew and 2% Watermelon TFA...and we've made it with both TFA and DV Absinthe. DV is better (more to come on that below).

This one's one the "to make" list (after we figger out what we'd like to sub for the rum): e-Liquid Calculator :: DIY Green Goblin

We've got three Absinthe creations of our own that we'll be making in the next few days (both based on DV's Absinthe). If they turn out good, we'll post the recipes. They're pretty bizarre, so there's a chance they won't be vapable, let alone 'postable'. (We're also making your White Chocolate Truffle/Cappuccino in that session...'been looking forward to that one for TOO long! :))

'Not surprised to hear you sense that FA's Anise and TFA's Absinthe are similar. Awhile back I was on the TFA and noticed the Absinthe was out-of-stock in the Bulk section...and they had posted a note and link to a site where one could get a substitute - and it was for straight Star Anise essential oil. Us: "Really? Your Absinthe is straight Star Anise & nothing more?" :::sigh:::

Now I see some of the listing say "Star Anise and natural flavorings", but one of them still doesn't.

We've since ordered/sampled DV's much acclaimed Absinthe...oh yeah, it's full of nuances that are definitely missing from TFAs. We got it at Liberty Flights. From DVs description: ... is made with over 20 herbs and spices, carefully blended to recreate the luxurious aniseed and wormwood flavour beloved of poets and artists, madmen and lovers. Go on, unleash your inner Bohemian!

Also - with DV's Absinthe, the anise is less intense due to the myriad of supporting flavors. It's absolutely AWESOME as a stand-a-lone at 5-6% (less actually works; we just liked it best at 5-6%). BUT if using it mixes that "need" the anise intensity of the TFA *Absinthe* - we recommend adding .5% the FA Anise.

We'll let you know how the new ones turn out as soon as they're ready to test vape!

Uh oh. Decadent Vapours, huh? I've never even looked at their flavors. I'll sure window shop their stuff soon!

"Bizarre" sounds fun! My favorite anise blend so far includes sharp lime and sweet ginger, plus a little horehound. DANG it is sooo goood, but the ginger is from a manufacturer I don't entirely trust, so I limit myself.

I've also liked anise with hot cinnamon. I've not been 'into' fruits lately so I didn't like the fruit + anise mixes I tried.

I have some Dr. Stanley Clarke's Original Recipe Snake Oil on the way, that is supposed to be citrusy with anise/absinthe - I am SO looking forward to try it, and see if I can replicate it ;)

If you like licorice/anise/absinthe you should try to find something by "Copsa" - a Dane that does some really nice liquid! I am currently sampling "Red Copsa" which is licorice with a touch of strawberry - it reminds me of something, but I can't think of what. It's really nice though.

Okay, I'll 'fess up...they're very much similar in nature to the underlined description above - and we don't really think they're "bizarre" (in fact we just tasted them, and we think they're genius).

After we've had a chance to vape 1ml or so of each of 'em, we'll decide if they're acceptable for publication. Hmmm, absinthe/anise, lime n' ginger, and horehound, eh? That be serious zing potential!

So Cal
I was sniffing my Absolute Pin, which I would love to be able to clone. Then I sniffed my bottle of Pluid and it has the exact absinthe undertone (overtone? LOL) of the Absolute Pin. I accidentally bought CAP Anise, which I doubt will be as good. I might use my Pluid as absinthe flavoring, since it's so 'in your face' I can't vape it!

One recipe I've been considering with anise would be to dissect the flavors in the Italian cookies called "ravasani" or "ravasanie". It's sort of a biscotti-like cookie made by Italians (more specifically, Sicilians) here in the Kansas City area. They're actually rather uncommon because of the tedious process. The dough is kneaded extensively, split into 'loaves' to dry a while, rolled then cut into cylinders (maybe 1" dia x 2" long), dried again, boiled, dried yet again, then the ends get cut 2x across so they end up with 4 'prongs', and finally baked. I've made them a couple times for my Sicilian father-in-law and they literally take 2 days from start to finish. They're very dry and crunchy, mildly sweet, and flavored with whole anise seeds...absolutely delicious.

Sorry for the long-winded description there, but I think they would make an excellent vape...anise, cookie/pie crust, maybe some toasted almond and/or vanilla, a touch of Acetyl Pyrazine, and something to sweeten slightly (EM?). Any thoughts on this rough draft?

Now that sounds right up my alley! Here are my thoughts about making a vape version.

If it's biscotti-like, I'd start with FA Cookie. It makes perfect biscotti. Most of my biscotti recipes use about 1.5-2% of Cookie.

Although I use FA Apple Pie plus FA Cookie to get a great bakery/crust effect (the apple flavor vanishes when mixed with bolder flavors, but the crust from Apple Pie is perfection) - I wouldn't put any pie crust in this type of cookie. It's too rich and buttery.

If they include baked or toasted almonds, I'd use FA Marzipan or a combo of it and FA Almond. Marzipan is a more sophisticated flavor, much better than FA Almond in bakery vapes. It's also very sweet, so you wouldn't need to add sweeteners. I would avoid EM as a sweetener here - it would reduce the high notes in FA Anise. ew.

If you use FA Marzipan, and you want some vanilla, either FA Vanilla Classic or FA Vanilla Bourbon would go well with it - I prefer the deeper flavor of Vanilla Bourbon with Marzipan. I'd match the percentage on the two, maybe 1% Marzipan with 1% Vanilla Bourbon.

If using FA Cookie, I'd leaves out acetyl pyrazine. Those bakery notes are already in it.

FA Anise is perfect for your recipe, but you already knew that. I'd start with 1% for a first try, but if it needs a lot of anise flavor, don't be afraid of higher percentages. This flavoring stays true up to wildly-high percents, so suit your taste buds.

Sounds good - whip up a batch and see how it matches the cookies you're familiar with. I'd love to hear how it comes out!
