A randomized controlled trial evaluating e-cigarettes effectiveness in reducing cigarette consumption and quitting smoking was published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The study, led by Prof Frank Baeyens from the University of Leuven-Belgium, evaluated the efficacy of e-cigarette use in reducing smoking craving (in a laboratory session) and subsequently the 5-month smoking reduction or cessation rate in 48 participants (smokers who had NO intention to quit smoking). A control group of smokers not using an e-cigarette was included; they were given an e-cigarette 2 months after study initiation.

... After two months, we observed that 34% of the e-cig groups had stopped smoking tobacco cigarettes, versus 0% of the control group. After five months, the e-cig groups demonstrated a total quit-rate of 37%, whereas the control group showed a quit rate of 38% three months after initiating e-cig use. At the end of the eight-month study, 19% of the e-cig groups and 25% of the control group were totally abstinent from smoking, while an overall reduction of 60% in the number of cigarettes smoked per day was observed (compared to intake) Remarkable (>50 pc) eight-month reductions in, or complete abstinence from tobacco smoking was achieved with the e-cig in almost half (44%) of the participants.

This should help if the ANTZ will read it, nice to have a study using gen 2 PVs proving what most on here have known from experience. Cigalikes work but gen 2 is much better, makes you wonder what affect the VV, VW and the new constant temp gen 3-4 units will have on future studies.

Consistency has been the one advantage that combustables have had, buy them, light them and they were the same every time, in 53 years of smoking I only used 2 brands and 5 different styles.

I personally believe this is why we are seeing BG, BP, BT and the ANTZ attempting to have such onerous regulations applied to e-cigarettes, if they can't stop the technology advances soon the general population will want to know why the he** are you trying to kill so many of our friends and family?

Politicians and large corporations really don't like answering those type of questions.

I think this is the primary reason why the 1st gen tech was so much less successful in helping people stay satisfied enough to actually quit and stay quit -- and even the lower-priced 2nd gen, like the small kanger tanks -- so little consistency. I've seen a LOT of posts around here that said basically, "I couldn't quit till I got a {kayfun, or something on that order}" -- because the better quality tanks provide a GREAT deal more consistency in the quality of the vape, so that vaping becomes *almost* as simple as lighting a cigarette.

This is also why I think it requires a real commitment to vaping instead of smoking; there are so many issues, things that can go wrong, you have to be really committed to the effort to work out the problems and keep vaping. People who start using e-cigs thinking, well let's see if this works -- if they run into a lot of the "technical difficulties," they often give up and go back to smoking. This place is a GODSEND for those who are more-or-less committed, but having problems; the support of the group in working out technical difficulties is absolutely invaluable.
