Why did tank manufacturers switch to bottom-filling?

Hi,

I've done the classic Cartos>Pen-Style>Mod & Tank route since I gave up smoking about 2 years ago.

During the time I was using the pen-style e-cigs, all the models I bought allowed me to simply unscrew the mouthpiece, fill it up and screw the mouthpiece back on. All nice and simple.

However, when I moved on to the mod & tank system, I found that all tanks I tried now required me to tip it upside down, unscrew the base, fill it up and then screw the base back on. This method often resulted in bits of liquid leaking out onto my hands, dripping on the floor, my shirt etc.

I'm much better at it now and can do it without any spillage, but I was just wondering if anyone knows why manufacturers started producing tanks which require filling from the bottom rather than the top? Seems a bit over-complicated to me.

Is there any advantage to bottom-filling over top-filling? I can't see any reason myself except maybe it's difficult to design a system that allows top access for filling as well as bottom access for coil replacement?

Are there any tanks available which allow simple top filling?

Thanks in advance.

The older top fill tanks were top coil with wicks that hang down. The juice holes are at the top above the liquid.

The bottom coil tanks rely on vacuum to keep from leaking thru the bottom juice holes. If you remove the top, thus breaking the vacuum, the juice will leak out the bottom.

I love my iSub Apex(s) and they don't leak. Not even a little bit! Still need to get off my .... and learn how to rebuild the heads on 'em, though. The RBA deck for the iSub Apex was a nightmare.
Do you change the cotton? For new coils they split apart in the middle which are a little tricky. Very rare you have to replace coils. Get a pin and from inside poke cotton out the holes. Twist cotton and pull it out. Wash coil and dry. Dryburn by twisting coil directly into mod. Install new cotton, cut cotton 1/4 to 1/8 inch and poke it threw the two holes. Got all my friends on them so they rarly have to buy coils.

Bottom Fill -
Wick/channels are out of the path of e-liquid entering, though Op is talking Gigantic bottom coil Clearomizers.

Due to - just don't get it personalities - manufacturers are offering more and more Top fill tanks.
As these become more prevalent, more and more complaints of Leaking Tanks are being reported.

Bottom fill = filling a cup
Top fill = filling a funnel

Top filling is very convenient. I'm honestly not sure if I would even consider buying a new tank these days without top fill. It would be a hard sale at the least.

Top fill on some tanks still isn't perfect though. I love my zephyrus v2. It takes me a decent amount of time to wick though. Have to make sure that the cotton tails are just the right length. Too short and I've got juice pouring out the airflow slots when filling. Too long and get dry/burnt hits.

Most new tanks that come out these days have top fill.

Some popular sub ohm tanks that have top fill

UWELL crown
Smok tfv4
Sense herakles plus
Kanger toptank mini
Aspire triton v2 and mini
UD zephyrus v2
Geek griffin 22 (RTA)

I have 1,3,4,6 only 1 and 4 so far had no leakage at all.
And much more already out and soon to be out, like the OBS ACE that I'm gonna get next. Oh, BTW, my Crown with rba leaks so I'm switching back to the SS 0.25 coils. Others in your list that I have, no leaking issue.

Wheelie, you're right. That's what I shoulda said! I'm gonna restuff the iSub head with cotton. Because, yeah, there's not enough room in there to get at the coil.

Smok TFV4 rebuildables are exactly the same. I give up prebuilding both tanks dry and then just filling them. Build them dry and open them up and use juice as an adhesive to get wicks in place perfectly when I want to fill them. I have five rebuildables or more for all tanks that have them. God I love FastTech. LOL CHEERS!
