Sourced some interesting aluminum and stabilized burl maple. The aluminum is not sized perfectly, but will be interesting to toy with.

Jeez, wish I was lucky enough to come across stock like that, it's a nearly made mod to start with.
I still think the aluminum has to be cut and then brazed unless you accept the odd size. That said, I got them from Speedy Metals. The stabilized wood if from eBay, but I sawed it in half with a small band saw. No work any time soon though as the kido has lacross on Saturday and Sunday is a "though shalt not do anything fun" holiday. On top of that the shop looks like a tornado went through it.
