This is a commercial from Truth.com I saw on TV late last night. They are going after smokeless tobacco. The earlier commercials (apparently they've been running since the 2004 Super Bowl) seemed to be attacking cigarette advertising, but it's really a deceiving way to convince people that smokeless is just as bad as smoking.

YouTube - Spheres Commercial

How ironic, considering BP makes a nearly identical product as tobacco lozenges - Nicorette lozenges, anyone? "And because we know taste buds need satisfying too, Nicorette Lozenge comes in some very tasty flavors like Original, Mint and Cherry." Or those cute "minis" with the funny shark commercial that the kiddies love?

In the second video, which is older, the "glass pop" executive says, "We now agree -there's is no such thing as a safe glass freeze pop," which alludes to the warnings on smokeless tobacco: “WARNING: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO CIGARETTES”.

YouTube - Shards O' Glass

What the gag commercial doesn't reveal is that tobacco companies are REQUIRED to say that, whether or not science supports that it is a SAFER alternative, because of the anti-tobacco lobby. The arrogance of these antis - to lobby to require that BT lie (by omission) and then say, "See, even they admit it!" What a crock.

Anti-tobacco groups go so far as completely lying and saying, "...you may want to quit smokeless tobacco once you realize the dangers are just as great as smoking cigarettes." (Smokeless Tobacco)

Ironically, based on the comments on the video on Youtube, most people are equating the commercial to smoking, not smokeless. (The one's that are smart enough to figure out that they aren't real glass shard pop products.) But as smokeless becomes more popular, we can expect these lies to be stepped up.

I commented on the video on YouTube, but who knows if anyone will read them.

We need our own campaign to expose this hypocracy and the lies being perpetrated upon the public!!

Just found this great Ed-Op in the Washington Examiner from March 2010:

Timothy P. Carney: Big Pharma rumbles with Big Tobacco | Washington Examiner

TPSAC is looking into the safety of dissolvable tobacco products, such as R.J. Reynolds' Camel Orbs, small tablets that melt in the mouth -- a quick fix for a smoking addict stuck on a plane or in a meeting. One TPSAC member, Gregory Connolly, has attacked them for being too candylike, thus appealing to kids.

But is nicotine gum like candy? How about the brand new mint-flavored Nicorette Mini lozenges?

Camel Orbs may or may not be a real health risk, but they are certainly competition to Nicorette's gums and lozenges -- and Henningfield's patented gum. Yet our government will count on Henningfield and others in the pay of Nicorette's maker for counsel on how to regulate Camel's product.
