The emerging phenomenon of electronic ... [Expert Rev Respir Med. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI

[h=1]The emerging phenomenon of electronic cigarettes.[/h]Caponnetto P, Campagna D, Papale G, Russo C, Polosa R.
[h=3]Source[/h]Centro per la Prevenzione e Cura del Tabagismo (CPCT), Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria 'Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele', Università di Catania, Catania, Italy.

[h=3]Abstract[/h]The need for novel and more effective approaches to tobacco control is unquestionable. The electronic cigarette is a battery-powered electronic nicotine delivery system that looks very similar to a conventional cigarette and is capable of emulating smoking, but without the combustion products accountable for smoking's damaging effects. Smokers who decide to switch to electronic cigarettes instead of continuing to smoke would achieve large health gains. The electronic cigarette is an emerging phenomenon that is becoming increasingly popular with smokers worldwide. Users report buying them to help quit smoking, to reduce cigarette consumption, to relieve tobacco withdrawal symptoms due to workplace smoking restrictions and to continue to have a 'smoking' experience but with reduced health risks. The focus of the present article is the health effects of using electronic cigarettes, with consideration given to the acceptability, safety and effectiveness of this product to serve as a long-term substitute for smoking or as a tool for smoking cessation.

And yet the antis still keep lying:

"However, since e-cigarettes have not been scientifically evaluated, there is no evidence that these products are safe for human consumption or that they are effective at helping smokers or other tobacco users quit, as some manufacturers continue to claim." --Utah Tobacco Prevention and Control Program

Working backwards:

  • The manufacturers are claiming no such thing. Not unless they want the FDA to jump in and shut them down.
  • Depends on your definition of "quit". There's a growing body of evidence that e-cigs help people stop inhaling smoke. E-cigs were never intended to be a nicotine-cessation product, although there are reports of consumers using them for that purpose.
  • There's no evidence that these products are unsafe for human consumption.
  • The Weinberg Group Inc. recently published a 23-page report "EMERGING LITERATURE ON ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES."

By "Literature", they are referring to scientific studies. The list of references takes up five pages.

Good to see that the group around Polosa published this review in a scientific journal. The full article rests behind a paywall for me, without an opportunity to read. I have no doubt, though, that their article is probably objective and factual - given the track record of the authors. Appears as if anything factual on e-cigs is always a positive. I still have to come across something actually negative concerning e-cigs. I mean something negative that would not be based on deliberately selected half-truths or on the invention of imaginary children...
