The writing in that article is amazing. They try to blur the distinction between developing with the aid of these cells, and actually putting the cells in the food or drink. Completely different thing. Further, sounds like from the second article that these cells came from one aborted fetus in 1970 and are just cultured from that. That would be a reason right there to not use something else.
There's a LOT of similarity between the hatchet job of that first article, and how the media and politicians are treating vaping.
