Sony originally was making their VTC5's in Japan (before Fukujimi).. They have since moved their production to the Philippines. However, there are many counterfeit batteries out there.

I recently saw this video (the Sony discussion starts at 1:05). The Plumes of Hazard - Episode 31

There are a couple of threads about this subject in the Battery sub-forum here.

It may only be a case of one Sony division not knowing what another division is doing, but one Sony rep replied to a customer email wanting confirmation of specifications by saying Sony hadn't made the VTC batteries in years. This left us wondering who was making the Sony VTC batteries currently on the market.

Then there was a recent You Tube video where participants said a Sony rep confirmed the VTC is now being made in a facility in the Phillipines after the original plant was damaged by the nuclear accident.

Illumination Supply is a trusted battery vendor, and they recently had a voluntary recall of recent Sony batteries sold by them as being rewrapped Samsung 25R 20 amp continuous batteries. Not a bad battery, but not the 30 amp continuous of the genuine Sony.

All of this information has come about within the past week.

So having said that, there are counterfeit Sony's on the market. Best bet to get authentic Sony's would be to purchase from the more trusted vendors such as RTD Vapor, Illumination Supply, and Orbtronics; and not from Ebay or Amazon who often unknowingly sell counterfeits.
