Making your own flavors/extracts

Does anyone know where to find good info on making your own flavoring components? I am trying to make some of my own flavors I have been unable to find elsewhere. I tried a slow, cool VG extraction and the flavor did not come through enough. I have some going with a vodka extraction now and am unsure of the dilution ratio. Any help appreciated.
