I'm another blah, blah, blah, silica fan. I'm HUGELY sensitive to fiberglass insulation and I have to wear long sleeve shirts to protect my arms when I'm even cutting a little 2mm wick or I break out in a very itchy rash in the contact area. Of course I am very cautious NOT to rub my eyes, nose, or any other sensitive area. That said I've been vaping off of silica based wicking systems on and off for a couple of years now and not once has it caused even the slightest discomfort during the actual vaping process.
And an off topic, just because I got absorbed reading this thread and others on alternatives... Here is a cheapo smok redux I just finished rewicking with about one quarter of a common cotton ball and about half a penny worth of 34 gauge kanthal A1 Vapor production is great but the flavor tastes a bit muted and the draw is tighter than OEM silica.
