I am trying to clean it but cannot unscrew the top hardware from the glass pyrex tank. the manual doesn't even make it that clear as to which direction I am supposed to unscrew it. Please help!

If hot water doesn't work, put it in the freezer. For some reason that always works for me.

Like mentioned, running hot water over the top part should help loosen the glass from the top part of the tank. If you hold the silver metal part in your left hand, unscrew the glass by turning counter-clockwise (towards you).
I try this but no matter how much foce I use it will move an inch to the right then an inch to the left I have no idea what to do

You may want to place some VG on the connector, or even something greasy like vaseline.

Stupid question ... do you have the bottom piece (where the airflow holes are located) unscrewed? The two of them actually connect together inside the glass tank, and if you don't have that one undone, you can try everything you want, but you'll never get the top piece unscrewed.
The drip tip itself does come out of the threaded area though by just twisting and pulling on it a bit.
