The FDA's so-called public workshop on e-cigs will begin at 8AM tomorrow (DC time) and will be on live webcam.
A Public Workshop – Electronic Cigarettes and the Public Health

FDA just posted the agenda for the two day workshop at
http://www.fda.gov/downloads/TobaccoProducts/NewsEvents/UCM425397.pdf

I'm not aware that any presenters who support THR or e-cigs (who don't work for the tobacco industry), although the FDA allowed Farsalinos to serve on one panel discussion.

More than half of the speakers are staff of FDA and other federal agencies (who will side with FDA), and the vast majority of speakers oppose THR and support FDA regulation. There are 5 speakers from the tobacco industry, which has endorsed the FDA deeming regulation, but at least they'll be objective about e-cig science.

The FDA has framed this e-cig workshop as "the FDA and public health advocates versus Big tobacco", which is what they want the news reporters to say (who will have reserved front row VIP seats, while the FDA locked the public from attending on November 11).

At the end of the 5 page agenda, this sentence was printed in red:

"The use of tobacco products is prohibited in all FDA facilities, including buildings, grounds, and parking structures."

Since the FDA's deeming regulations have not yet gone into effect, does that mean all the participants could (if they were so inclined...yeah, riiiight!) vape electronic cigarettes while making their presentations?

The FDA's Michael Trehy (who did the 2009 e-cig test that was misrepresented to the public to say e-cigs contain toxic DEG and carcinogens) is now presenting.

He also did a study in 2011 that found that some e-cigs (of many tested) were mislabeled for nicotine content.
Most of those mislabeled e-cigs were because the manufacturer didn't include "per ml" on the label (and just listed the amount of nicotine in mgs).

He's wasting everyone's time by talking about e-cig products that were sold 3-6 years ago, and are no longer on the market.
Trehy: "some contained trace levels of nitrosamines, which raises concerns"

Except that FDA NRT products also contain trace levels of nitrosamines. But even more importantly, there's no evidence that nitrosamines have ever caused cancer in any human (rats aren't men).

Roswell Park's Macej Goniewicz is now presenting. His research found nontoxic trace levels of so-called toxins in e-cigs and vapor, but he told the NY Times (before the study was even published) that he found lots of toxins and carcinongens in e-cigs (in an article by Matt Richtel scaring people about e-cigs poisoning people).

Goniewicz also did a survey of Polish teens that found teen smokers were about 27 times more likely than nonsmokers to report past month e-cig use, but he told the news media that his study found a huge increase in Polish youth using e-cigs, and another recent junk study claiming teen e-cig use is causing teen smoking to increase.

Not surprisingly, he just urged the FDA to impose lots of different "standards" on all e-cig products/manufacturers "to protect the consumers."

Prue Talbot's coconspirator Monique Williams is now presenting. This will be yet more fear mongering about e-cigs citing highly questionable studies conducted 3-4 years ago.

She's also urging the FDA to take action to reduce or eliminate constituents in e-cigs, which can only occur if FDA imposes the deeming regulation.

So while the FDA said the purpose of the workshop wasn't about the deeming reg, many/most of the invited ANTZ presenters are urging the FDA to impose the deeming regulation (by grossly misrepresenting the risks of e-cigs, and failing to compare them to cigarettes to scare everyone).

Anyone else getting terrible stuttering?

Almost 100% rock solid for me and my spot check of my audio recordings are all good. Maybe try a restart of your OS and then go direct to log in. Don't run any other applications. On the other hand, as the West Coast wakes up their "pipe" may be getting overloaded. Hard to say.

EDIT: Also make sure Flash is UTD with the latest version.

Wow, Goniewicz finally acknowledged the many benefits of e-cigs for smokers (during the Q&A).

Tom Eissenberg is now up (who infamously told CNN TV that e-cigs contain no nicotine, and therefore FDA should ban them).

Since then, he's done other studies finding nicotine in e-cigs, and then the FDA invited him to its TPSAC, and is now funding him as well.

Eissenberg (just like Goniewicz and Williams) has been urging the FDA to impose various regulations and standards for e-cigs (even though FDA claimed the purpose of the meeting had nothing to do with the deeming reg).

Wow, Micheal Hufford showed a slide labelling e-cigs as "enjoyable" and FDA approved NRT as "not enjoyable", and the FDA hasn't turned off his microphone or escorted him out of the conference yet.

Wonder what he told the FDA to let him present, as he's a vaping advocate, he's advocating PVs and e-liquid and even more new and improved vapor products, and he's mocking FDA approved nicotine inhalers.

His presentation was excellent until he endorsed the deeming regulation, which would ban nearly all of the vapor products he correctly states are far less hazardous than cigarettes.

Thanks Bill. I had to hear it for myself. Hufford's presentation starts at 103:17 in my recording titled FDA3.mp3
