I tuned in to the wrap up show on the drive home today from work. The guys were discussing Sal's conversion to electronic cigarettes and spreading misinformation to millions of listeners. What was stated is that the liquid contained "transmission fluid" and that the priliminary testing did not look good. They refered e-cigs as smoking "liquid plastic". They also stated that they would rather prefer Sal to smoke real cigarettes. I was shocked and angry at the same time being a fan of the show. I went to their website and went to the contact section to comment. Here is what I wrote:

I tuned in to the wrap up show recap on the way home from work today. It was interesting to hear that everyone was mocking Sal's electronic cigarette and spreading misinformation to millions of listeners. I am for one a user of the electronic cigarette and have been smoke free for 8 months and feel my health has improved 10 fold. The liquid nicotine in e-cigarettes DO NOT CONTAIN "transmission fluid". I don't think Sal would be living if that was the case. Many celebrities have switched to electronic cigarettes including Rush Limbaugh, Johnny Depp, Leonardo Dicaprio and Catherine Heigl. I know that Sal has done his friends and family a huge favor by converting to e-cigs. Although I can't say that I have been a big fan of him over the years, e-cigs will very likely keep him here on this planet and the show for a bit longer. Here are the facts:
Regular tobacco cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals of which 81 are cancer causing carcinogens like Arsenic, Chloroform and Formaldehyde.
There is no "smoke" in an electronic cigarette. A liquid nicotine solution is "vaporized" by heating it through an atomizer that is connected to a battery. The exhaled mist is liquid vapor and not 2nd hand harmful smoke.
The ingredients in the liquid nicotine solution are:
•USP-grade PG (Propylene Glycol) – used in food flavorings, cosmetics, the artificial “smoke” at rock concerts, and, yes, antifreeze. [No, we are not inhaling antifreeze (shudder), just one of its ingredients.] NOTE: Some people are allergic to PG (e.g., a rash or sore throat, but nothing serious). They should use…
•And/or USP-grade VG (Vegetable Glycerin – more syrupy, and derived from veggies)
•Plus a selectable amount of nicotine (derived from tobacco)
•Plus flavoring (derived from different types of tobacco and/or food/candy flavorings).

Please pass this info to Sal to have him feel better about his change to electronic cigarettes.
More info can be found at e-cigarette-forum.com the largest forum of e-cigs in the world.

Kindest regards from a big fan and non-smoker.

Here is Sal Governale of the Howard Stern Show using an e-cigarette:

I took some excerpts from this site on the list of ingredients and hope that is ok.

I don't think it was intended to offend anyone. Their comments were a result of misinformation and them truely feeling that e-cigs were more harmful than regular cigarettes. Our biggest battle is always a result of misinformation and educating the public on what e-cigs are all about is going to help the cause. I don't know if my comments will ever get anywhere but will let you know if there is a response.

I found a summary of the show:

...Jon said he also smokes that fake cigarette and that's no good for you either. Sal said it's all good. He's feeling fine too.

Richard said it is funny when Sal smokes those things while he's watching porn and pulling clips. Sal said he's been having digestive problems lately and he's not sure if it's the Propecia. He said he gave up caffeine and started drinking chamomile tea. He said he has coffee flavored tobacco juice too so he has his coffee that way. Richard said he tried talking him into using that stuff because they have pumpkin flavored stuff.

Gary said he's worried about the fake smoking thing more than the Propecia. He said that they think that stuff is bad for you and he'd almost rather have Sal smoking real cigarettes. Sal said that they're making money from it so the tobacco companies don't want it out there. Sal said that they found the liquid had transmission fluid in it and that's where it all got started. He doesn't think that it's in the stuff he uses. Jon said that they tell you to stay away from pregnant women when you're on that Propecia though. Sal said that he's doing fine though. Sal said that you only live once so he's going to do what he wants as long as he's around. Sal said he's into holistic medicine these days too. Gary said he smokes liquid plastic so how can he be into that? Sal said he wanted to clear his mind so he got a book that helps you tap into your subconscious mind. He said that you close your eyes and do a meditation like thing. He said you try not to think all of the negative thoughts. He said he's trying to reprogram himself in that way. They had to end the show a short time later.

I don't care for Stern, but I do know he is all about entertainment, not facts. Saying someone is inhaling transmission fluid is funnier than saying they are inhaling propylene glycol or glycerin (which many Stern fans wouldn't have clue what they are anyway). It certainly isn't good for our cause to have yet another false rumor to deal with....but I don't think Stern really cares if he gets out the facts or not. If it was good for ratings....Stern would happily announce e-cig usere were inhaling vaporized breast milk....a topic he has an almost twisted infatuation with.
