I wonder if dryness of the lips could trigger cold sores though? If I get even a little sunburnt on my face (lips) it's a guarantee that a cold sore will develop. The sun itself can't be triggering my cold sores (can it?) so perhaps it's the resulting dryness of being out in the sun?
Personally I found the dehydrating effects of VG to be increased for me - although both PG and VG are very drying.
