So, during my 3 hour lunch break I went home. I ate lunch and laid down on my bed watching tv. I was vaping some strapple in my ssgts. I guess I fell asleep. When I got up I looked at the clock, I took about an hour nap I guess, I see my ssgts and reach for it not even thinking.... OUCH!! it was so hot, I still have black burn marks on my hand from grabbing it. I panicked. Oh my god what's going on?? I reach for an old shirt and grab the ggts. I still feel the heat through the shirt, I grab it and run towards the door and I throw it as hard as I can into the yard fully expecting it to explode mid air like a gernade in a war movie.

I wait for a few mins and nothing happens. I go out and look at it and the tank I had on it was dry and there was liquid comming out of the air vents at the bottom. I pick it up and carefully unscrew it despite the heat, I drop the battery on the ground take the ggts and throw it in the sink full of water to let it cool off. The metal actually made a sound when I put it on the water like if you were to drop a hot peice of iron into water after molding it. I now realize that when I fell asleep I placed it down in such a way that the button was being pressed. It was fireing for about an hour and 15 mins without stopping.

Imagine if it had started to vent and erupt on top of the bed when I was sleeping? Please be careful guys if your using a mechanical mod in bed. How close was it to happenening? The battery looked kinda big and was hard to get out. Man I was freaking out.

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago.

I change into a uniform at work, and keep my street clothes in my locker. I had been storing my mech mod in a pants pocket hanging in the locker. Went in for a vape during a work break and discovered the same thing you did. The mod was too hot to touch.

I eventually got to see the below battery. The protruding button of my mod had become compressed in the pants pocket, causing a hard short resulting in a thermal runaway battery.

Lessons learned:

I no longer buy batteries with "-fire" in the name.

I no longer use "protected" batteries. High drain, IMR batteries are safer chemistry and less likely to short out or explode.

I no longer place batteries in a tight space that could unknowingly compress the firing button.

If you are going to transport your mod in a pocket, disconnect the electrical circuit by either removing the battery or the juice delivery device first.

Just out of curiosity, how did you handle the situation? In my state of confusion from just waking up my first thought was get it out of the house. What did you do?

Well, I had an idea of what was happening, as I'd read of horror stories of exploding batteries. My first thought was to get some water onto the mod to cool it down.

I saw no gases being released from the mod, but could tell from the melted paint around the fire switch (where the mod is designed to vent) that the process was more in a winding down state than one in progress or starting up. I grabbed a wet washcloth and removed the mod from the pants pocket. It was then that I could clearly smell the odor of melted plastic or burnt electronics.

I removed the battery carefully and inspected it. Both ends had separated from the venting, and the battery's plastic skin had melted away and distorted the shape of the battery. As noted, the firing switch is designed to release any hot gases which it did. Surprisingly, after cleansing the mod the fire switch continued to work for a few days, then stopped working and had to be replaced by the manufacturer. The hot spring was still functional, although it now had a layer of black carbon on it which I removed by running it under water.

The pants pocket where the mod had been was black; not sure from being burnt or if it was from the paint from the black mod that was in it. It did appear to have an oily or greasy feel to it.

I use box mods. I don't worry about them exploding, but I do worry about fire and venting and such.

Anyway, my mods have a BIG FAT button with a HEAVY spring. My fingers get a workout, and can get tired. But I can set that mod down on the button, with a full tank connected, and it won't go off. Also, I usually flip the master switch off when "I'm done" for a bit.

Tube mods bug me. I won't use em, unless it's for a temporary backup or something.

Plus the box mod fits in my pocket like a pack of cigs used to. And doesn't roll around when I set it down.

Just IMHO.

Glad you're OK OP.

It's was an orange aw imr 18650. The ggts was laying button down on a blanket I had next to me so the button was being held down by the weight of the mod( I have the magnetic switch mod on my ggts) if it had the regular spring button this wouldn't of happened I don't think since the button was harder to press with the spring. I was using a kanger protank which, surprisingly, still works lol.

The mod I was using was an Altsmoke BB. Note the protruding horn fire button. The Smoktech Bolt shares the same type of button so the same precautions need to be taken with that mod.

The battery used during my incident was a Trustfire protected ICR 14500 battery that was recommended and sold by the manufacturer.

With my Original Precise 18650 w/Panasonic Hybrid/IMR CGR18650CH 2250mAh 3.7V bats, I had to add a smaller o-ring and added one brass washer to adjust the throw of the bottom button...its adjusted to the point where I can set it on any surface and it won't fire unless the button passes the protective horns...pretty much I have to press the button completely for contact.

Love my Original P18 and these new batteries...no misfires and no more worrying of it firing on its own...no locking button necessary.

Be safe ya'll!

happened to me 2 years ago on a mech mod... left mod in car... in drink holder... it was a bottom button... gravity activated it and it melted a drip tip, ruined and atty... and the batts swelled and were nearly impossible to get out... and the atty was warped/morphed on tighter... now I always remove batts when not using

My roller fired in my purse the other day. My husband and I were driving. I didn't have the button turned to the off position and it got pressed. It couldn't have been much more than a few seconds (I smelled it) it warped my drip tip. Other than a slightly burnt finger, every thing else was alright. I was using an unprotected Panasonic battery and it's ok. I'm now careful to turn it off when I put it in my purse!

wow....horror stories indeed...

I tend to keep my mods on tables near me, or desks.....not in bed at all.

I prolly need a lanyard tho, I usually carry my mod in my hand out in the car or in public. Not much in my pocket, had a switch depress against my leg once for 5 minutes or so.....started gettin warm......stopped using pockets.

I always use remove my bats when not using my P18 and never put it in a pocket, always within my grasp or on my table when in use. My Original P18 doesn't have slotted vents so I am a lil more cautious than normal, I did have an ego bat go all emo on me and that bat vented but I threw it like an m80...the button got stuck and I didn't realize it. Other than that, no batteries goin emo on me...I was using the same batteries that I got with my P18 and they finally died, I'm sleepy...good night.

Have a severe pressure migraine and can't type so swell.
