Why is this premade coil so much better than my RBA builds?

Hey Guys,

So, I started rebuilding recently, and I've done a serious amount of research, purchased a good amount of supplies... Every wire type in a few gauges except for stainless steel.

I've tried various wicking techniques amounts and materials, and various coil build techniques and materials. I've watched seriously thousands of build videos, and gone through every series on youtube from start to finish.

I just got my first sub-ohm tank that comes with a pre-built coil (this one is a 1.5 ohm kanthal clapton / BF clapton from joyetech being put in a cubis RTA). Prior to this I've used/owned an authentic aromamizer, a tobeco clone derringer, a deadmodz v2 dripper, and an authentic Goblin Mini v2, and I've experimented with multiple coil material types wrapping techniques and arrangements, wicking techniques, etc, in each tank and dripper.

Now, with this pre-built coil head I can for the first time taste my juice on the inhale (prior to this, I couldn't at all, granted that could be partly due to the tank itself, it's the new joyetech cubis and I'm quickly realizing that this thing is possibly just amazing...) but, is there something else that could be going on here? What could I potentially be doing wrong with my rebuildables? I make sure everytime to dry fire and even out the coils so they burn from the inside out. I've tried spaced and fused coils. I'm using a wismec dna200 and I have set everything up in evolv properly. I have been using koh gen do organic japanese cotton for the most part for wicking, but plan to experiment with ceramic rods/SS mesh and ceramic coils soon...

Anyway, the first drag I took off of this prebuilt clapton coil thrown into the CUBIS was like a revelation, and a dissapointment all at the same time.. like "WOW, and then, jesus what the **** have I been doing so wrong..." I could taste the flavors on the inhale, and my tobacco NET juices tasted like "real" burning tobacco instead of tasting like the smell of dried tobacco leaves all of a sudden.

Any help here would be highly appreciated, how could these prebuilt coils be in such another league from what I'm wrapping after so much research and experimentaiton? I put a ton of effort into the builds im doing so far and make sure everything is damn near perfectly spaced/even/fires even, wicked properly, etc.

My next step is going to be the rebuildable head on the CUBIS with a hand-built kanthal clapton just to rule out it being the tank, I hope that's not the case, because this things kind of ugly. We'll see in a few minutes.

Thanks!

GEM

I started out rebuilding as well. I didn't bother with clearomizers/cartomizers outside of my initial jump into cigalikes. I actually started vaping circa 2000 back when this super tiny company in portland oregon started getting big selling cigalikes.. think they turned into halo, then just got back into it recently and jumped straight into RBA's and regulated mods, this is the first time ive tried a prebuilt coil, and I just don't get how this can be so much more flavorful than my personal coil builds!

I will say though, I can't seem to avoid flooding this darned thing...

Maybe you need more practice?

I vaped a lot of clearomisers and tanks and have never seen a premade coil offer the flavor of my own coil.

Here is what I do.

1. A .8 ohm build of 26 gauge Kanthal 2 mm diameter coil

2. Wick it with Rayon just about as tight as I can get it and trim the tails so they go to the bottom of the juice wells in my Silverplay Nano, Kayfun Monster Mini, and Ohmega Nano.

Gotta say you have got me stumped on this one. I am no expert by any means, but any coil I have built has been worlds above premade coil heads.
Ditto! The only halfway decent premade coil I have found is the coil in my little egrip (my go to vape when I am out and about in public needing to catch a stealth vape.)

Flooding is generally s sign there is not enough cotton in the wick.

When I used cotton for wicking; I had the cotton tight but barely able to slide inside the coil. When the wick is saturated the cotton swells to fit the coil exactly.

Never had an RTA flood after I started using that method.

I used a Goblin Mini, and Silverplay Nano with airflow directly under the coils, and never had an issue of leaking on those.

Hmmm. I guess I am listening for good replies. I have to say that I have always built my own. Kinda out of enjoyment, but also to not be tied to a vendor's prices.

Good question, thanks.
Ditto. If the Congress doesn't stop the FDA deeming regulations premade coils and tanks that use them will GO BYE BYE in about two years.

I am waiting for Fasttech to ship my three RBAs for my little egrip.

I'm with herb. We need some pictures of your builds to be able to give you some good info, otherwise we're just guessing. My first thought is you might have wicked it too tight or too loose. I sometimes have issues with wicking, but once I get it right it's a night and day difference to pre-built coils. I use rayon for wick.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that it's the size of the vaporization chamber.

I'm not familiar with the Cubis BF Clapton, but it sure looks smaller than most RTA decks I've seen. Smaller area = more condensed vapor = different flavor.

I have at least one juice that is just divine on Kanger Protank coils, totally meh on every RTA and configuration I've tried (I've tried several dozen). Other juices are just fine either way.

Annoying, isn't it?

The cubis is a non-rebuildable sub ohm tank atomizer that you can purchase an after-market rebuildable OCC coil head for. So it doesn't have a conventional deck like an RTA would with postholes and screws, but an OCC coil-head thats empty that you slide a coil into in a vertical mount style, fasten down, then screw the whole coil head onto the chimney threading.

I think it may actually be just the cubis adding so much to the flavor, from further experimentation -- the cubis SPITS like a ...., like, really, really bad, no matter how you build and or wick it, or what prebuilt coil head you use, so it makes me think maybe the unique sealed chamber design might spit more ejuice that is "less atomized" at you, so essentially you're tasting more "unvaporized" juice per puff than you normally would. Idk, its just a theory so far.

I've gone on to try a few more wacky things, such as ceramic coils in a dripper, and I am learning as I go, but my experience still seems to weigh on the topic of this post no matter how much I play around with different things, this cubis tank with the clapton coil head has absurdly good flavor for seemingly no good explanation. The only thing I've done that has more flavor has been putting a bare ceramic coil element in the BF rebuildable head mounted in the joyetech cubis.

It's a shame though, because the cubis spits so much its practically unusable to vape with regardless if I build and wick it myself using the BF rebuildable coil head or a prebuilt joyetech coil head.
