Why do I read lower resistance on my mod than spec?

Hi all,

I have just started vaping a week ago and I replaced the coil on my atomizer but I am having issues with the resistance. It's reading lower than coil's 0.5 ohm spec. It sometimes goes all the way to 0.15 ohm but mostly around 0.43 ohm.

I am curious why it's doing this and if it's dangerous for me?

My mod is Target Mini, atomizer is Joytech Cubis Pro and the coil is SS316 0.5ohm DL.

Thanks.

Factory-made atomizer head are not always made to exact specifications. Neither are ohm readers for that matter. If you put the tank and one ohm reader, and then move it to another ohm reader, it should read very close to the same. Within half of an ohm at least.

Having at least two ohm readers is better safety. I have a stand-alone ohm reader that I use, but then I check it on a mod, too. If it doesn't seem right I have even used a third. In the end, I just want to accurately know the resistance (Ohms) so I can adjust my power to support it to my liking.

Having to much/to little power for the resistance can influence the amount of heat the coil puts out. That can burn the juice or cause less vape. They work together.

The resistance us for the wire in the mod, Atty and coil. So it is normal for the coils to be a little lower than the resistance reported.

.15 is way outside the normal range.

.43-.47 is normal. For a .5 ohm coil

@Frenchfry1942 & @Two_Bears ,

Thank you both for the quick responses.

So for a coil of this type (SS316 0.5ohm DL), which mode should I use with my mod? It has various modes such as: Ni, SS, Ti, M1, M2, and the default one that lets me adjust Wattage. This issue happens when I try to vape in the SS mode adjusting the temperature. It shows between 0.13 and 0.15. On default mode (VW) it shows 0.43 which I understand to be within the expected range.

Thanks.

Could try to simplify your vaping and stay away from intermediate and advanced vape setups, which can present many vaping problematic unknowns to the beginner. Recommend going back to the basics and read:

Welcome @Basar and I hope you enjoy your stay!

As others already said slight differences are normal and also heat and gunk from use will affect the Ohm Reading. SS316L can be used in TC or Power/Wattage modes. I personally only use it in TC and have never tried power mode.

Thank you.

Something isn't right. The resistance shouldn't change because you change modes.

I am not sure but it does, maybe my coil doesn't support the different modes?

Here are some photos to clarify what I am talking abo ut (because maybe this is normal but as a vape noob I am making too much out of it).

This is the coil I am using:

This is the mode in which I get good flavor and vape:

But from what I read online and my mod's manual, I should be able to use it in the following mode too, or not? Notice the resistance has dropped (upper left):

What am I missing? Sorry if all this sounds dumb to the pros out there :-/

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the links, I'll definitely check them out. I really enjoy it so far aside from the few issues mentioned (and not such as liquid coming out of the mouth piece which was fixed by closing the air holes a little and keeping them closed when refilling).

Thank you all again.

...

That Definitely is Weird.

Could it be that the Ohms are Lock when you go into TC Mode? I have some TC Mods where when in TC Mode, it helps to Unscrew the Atomizer and then Press the Fire Button. It will say "No Atomizer".

Then I screw the Atomizer on (making sure that the Atomizer is at Room Temperature and Not Warm from Vaping) and the Mod will ask if this is a "New Coil?".

When I click the Button for Yes, it then reads the Coil Ohms correctly.

BTW - None of what you have posted sounds Dumb. So don't ever Feel you shouldn't Ask when you have a Question. Or when something Funky like this is going on.
