Why do I keep burning my coils?

I'm new to vaping and got the Nautilus mini with vapros nunchaku battery by vision. It's vw 6 to 18w and I have been using it at about 8 or 9. The first week was fine but now I only get 1 or two days before I take a pull and get a burnt taste that won't go away. I've been priming my coils by dropping juice in them before first use and taking hits without firing, and also taking primer puffs between hits. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but something isn't right.

Hi Adam and welcome to ECF!

There are a few thing that might help.
  • Your vaping style.
If you take short, hard draws, one right after the other, this can cause the coil to get quite hot and you'll get a harsher vape because of the heat. Try taking gentler, longer draws and see if that makes a difference.

  • The power setting of your device.
Start with a low power setting, take a draw or two, then step the power up a bit. When you reach the point where the vape is harsh or the flavor starts to go away, back the power down a notch. Each different juice will have its own "sweet spot" regarding power.

  • The heat of the coil.
I know when I first started vaping, I was doing it like smoking. Taking short, quick draws, one right after the other. This gets the coil very hot, cooks the juice and can get quite harsh.

  • Dry hits.
This is when the wicking material can't keep up with how you are vaping. The coil gets dry and you get a nasty burnt taste. Give the wicking a few seconds between draws so that they can keep the coils wet.

Hope this helps and wasn't overwhelming.

Happy Vaping!

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong (because I'm still pretty new to all this), but have you tried switching the airflow ring to a smaller hole? I know I was having the opposite problem of getting too much juice going to my coil, which was resulting in gurgling/flooding, and switching to the biggest air hole setting fixed my problem immediately. I haven't experienced your specific issue myself though, it was just a thought I wanted to share.

I'm sure I saw a few posts regarding a burnt taste when I was researching the Mini, so you might want to try a search on here for more ideas. Wishing you luck in getting it sorted out, because when it's working properly this tank is amazing! :)

to ecf AdamAAdams. Nice to meet you and so glad you are here. I'm sure you will get lots of help because I read where a lot of people love the Nautilus. Have you changed juice. I use to have that particular problem and it ended up being something in the juice. After I changed, it worked fine. Just me, but I'm sure someone will help you. That is what makes ecf such a special place to be. Good luck to you and happy vaping.

I use the bvc coils and have been experimenting with different juice often changing two to three times a day. I have a few 50/50 blends from local shops and a sample pack from virgin vapor of 11 different flavors that are 100% vg but don't seem much thicker than my 50/50 blends. Virgin is a organic juice that has some good flavor but not very strong. The first juice I tried was mothers milk that's a 70/30 blend I think and I loved it but heard bad things about the juice being unhealthy.

The coils are 2 ohms and I have been vaping from 50/50 to 100%vg

Add 2 or 3 drops of distilled water to a tank when you refill. It will lower the viscosity of the juice without much affect on the flavor or vapor. Drop down on air hole size and try each air setting for a while until you determine which is best for your juice. 50/50 should work much better than 100%VG.

So I have been vaping a 50/50 blend and have been taking longer harder hits giving time in between to let the coil wick. Even covering the air hole and taking hits without firing until I don't see bubbles coming out. Was doing good all day yesterday then today a took a hit and a very harsh burnt taste. I have my battery set at 8w. When I put in the new coil I set to the lowest 6w and slowly worked up to 8w where I like it. It has been a every other day thing and I've been doing everything I could think of to keep the coil wicked and can't figure out what is going on. Especially since I had no problems at all the first week I got the thing.

Hmmm. That's so strange that it's hit or miss like that.

Are you keeping the tank stored with the tip up when you're not using it so the juice can keep soaking into the coil? Hopefully someone else will post some other ideas because that's all I can think of. In the meantime maybe try keeping it at a lower wattage setting if it only starts to give problems once it's turned up.

Oh, one last thought in case it wasn't brought up in this thread- I remember reading that it's almost impossible to get out the burnt taste in a coil once that has happened, so definitely try putting in a new coil and keeping it turned down, too. If it's just the leftover burnt taste then changing out the coil (and possibly putting in fresh juice?) should at least let you start over new again like when you first started. You could put your current coil in a zip lock bag to save it in case that doesn't help.

I know trying to figure out why something isn't working is extremely frustrating, so hang in there! You're not alone. :)

Think I figured out my problem! I have been using a plastic swivel drip tip and I am pretty sure that it has loosened up and was letting in to much air so the coils wouldn't wick. I tried to fix it, put in new juice and coil and got about halfway through the tank before burned again. So I just put the factory tip in and it seems to be working better. The coil is still burned and the tank is half full but I've been wasting so much juice and coils lately that I'm going to tough it out and finish the tank before I put a new coil in and hope I solved my problem.

Yay! Good to know. :)

I was looking up drip tips that might fit the Mini and found that it seems to have a bigger opening than other standard 510 openings. I have one that I ordered online yesterday that I'm going to be trying out, but I doubt it's going to fit right. Someone did suggest wrapping some dental floss around the silicone ring in the tip to make it more snug, so I'm gonna try that and if it doesn't work I'll just give the tip away or store it with my unused tank. :) Now I know to keep an eye out for other new problems that may pop up while I'm trying it though, so thanks for that!
