What coil to build for MTL?

Long story short - what kind of build for a flavourful MTL hit on Merlin Mini? I have a huge selection of SS316 wire available. You can skip the reason below if you like...

I am not a MTL vaper - I like a very restricted DTL hit. However, I hate hearing my dad coughing his guts up and he hates every vape product of mine that he's tried because it makes him cough more (transiently at least) than cigarettes. When I say I hate hearing him coughing, I mean that in a compassionate sense rather than "...., I'm reading!" etc
I bought him a smok alien because I figure that has the capability of running anything until he finds/I find him something he likes.

I have a merlin mini that I don't use anymore which comes with airflow restrictors of two different sizes however I have no idea what kind of builds work well for MTL hits. To me it feels like I'm struggling to produce a tiny bit of flavourless vapour or burning my mouth and wicks trying to MTL a device set up for DTL hits. Meanwhile "tootle puffers" claim to get better flavour from simple-build MTL hits than exotic coil DTL hits, so I know I'm doing something wrong when I've tried...

You could try a coil that has a higher resistance (1 Ohm to 1.5 Ohm) and set your mod in the 10 to 15 Watt range. SS316 has a rather low resistance compared to Kanthal, so it'd not be my first choice for these kind of MTL builds.

I don't know anything about the merlin mini ... however, on my Kayfuns, I do 7 wraps of 30ga on the little blue screwdriver.

comes to 1.7ohms

I use 26g SS316 for MTL TC builds in my Berserker MTL RDA about 7-8 wraps (compact not spaced) around 2.5mm screwdriver. It comes out to about .5 ohms. Perfect for TC MTL.

I would use regular Kanthal if I were you though. My everyday build (in ALL my devices) is 28g Kanthal around a 2.5mm screwdriver 6 wraps. Ohms out to about 1.3 ohms. Perfect for flavor in just about any MTL tank or RBA!

Maybe a Single 3mm 6 or 7 Wrap Coil of 28ga SS316?

Or if you have it, the Same coil made from 28ga NiChrome 80.

Resistance wise, somewhere from 1.2 to 1.6 may give a more MTL vape, especially in wattage mode. IDK how well the Merlin will fare with the airflow reducers, but it may be worth a shot, and may give your dad a more enjoyable experience. I'd suggest using kanthal too, if you know your dad will stay mainly in wattage mode, otherwise SS wire can be useful as it's vaped in either mode.

I do not know how much space is in the Merlin, but steam-engine.org should give you a sense of what type of wire and coil size might work best in that atty, and you can experiment with different wires.

Cheers for the tips guys I think I may have some kanthal lying around somewhere that I can try digging up. Maybe this will be a good opportunity to use up some of the really thin wires I've been sent as freebies
