    Somewhere between here and there
As promised, here I am back with the second of two reviews for Voopoo. This time I will be taking a look at the new Argus G Pod kit that was sent to me in order to provide you with a fair and honest review. The G is a bit of an upgrade from the SE model that I covered on my last review. This one has a 1000mah internal battery where the SE had 800mah. The G also has a higher maximum wattage of 25 watts and has adjustable output as well as a display screen and a fire/function button. Sounds pretty good right? It also has a sliding airflow control on the side and a rubber base to help keep it from sliding around on tables and desks. All of this while also looking fantastic thanks to a nano-scale polishing process. Stay tuned and we’ll see if the hype pays off in the end.

    INITIAL THOUGHTS:

The packaging for the Argus G is pretty basic with a box that opens from one end and a plastic tray that slides out with a bag of accessories underneath. I’ve seen this from Voopoo before where the nicer of two review kits comes in packaging that isn’t quite as nice as the less expensive unit. The SE had a nice slide out box where the G just has an open end box with a plastic tray. I would think it would be the opposite where the more expensive unit would have nicer packaging. Anyway, it’s just something that I’ve noticed over time.

The front of the box has the Voopoo and Argus G names with a really nice color picture of the actual color version contained inside the box. I like when it is done this way instead of using a stock image for all color versions. Also the color version is listed on the front as well as a sticker stating that it is in fact compatible with the Argus Pod cartridge. The back side of the box has the normal contents list, company information, and in this case a large sticker with the word sample on it. This is just for review samples and will not be on production models.

Once the top of the box is opened then the plastic tray can be slid out. Underneath the tray is a sealed plastic bag with the accessories contained inside. I personally don’t care for this type of set up since most times the plastic bag will fall to the table or ground since you’re not expecting something to be tucked underneath the tray. The G comes with the same .7 and 1.2 ohm pod cartridges as the SE that I just reviewed did. Also in the plastic bag is the USB-C charging cable, user manual and a lanyard as well as the second included pod. I’m glad that Voopoo included two pods with this one and the SE. I feel like that should always be the case with any pod device.

Besides the kit with the two pods, Voopoo was nice enough to include a two pack of the Argus pod empty cartridges that use the ITO coils and included two .5 ohm coils for testing. These pods are also 2ml in capacity just like the ones included in the kit.

The pods included are compatible with the Argus P1, Argus G, Argus Z, Argus Pod, and the Argus Pod SE. It’s nice that they are compatible across so many devices. So both the G and SE that I received for review can use the same pods. However, the .5 ohm coils I received with the empty pod cartridge are only recommended for the SE since it offers a higher output level at 25 watts. When the pod is installed in the G the Gene chip recognizes the resistance and defaults to 23 watts. The SE is limited to 18 watts so isn’t a good match for it. The .7 ohm pre-built pod is sensed and defaults to 16 watts while the 1.2 ohm pod defaults to 10 watts. This is a good feature especially for beginners so they don’t over power the coils in the pods and burn the cotton inside.

Since the G comes with the .7 ohm pod pre-installed, it does have a clear safety seal over the contacts in order to keep it from being fired before the pod is filled. They are sold separately but I was given a two pack of the empty pods and two .5 ohm ITO coils. This was by far my favorite set up of the three pods. Like I said, it defaulted to 23 watts but it easily handled the maximum output of 25 watts. One thing that is different about the empty pod cartridges is that the fill port is on the skinny side of the pod instead of on the wider flat side of the pod like the .7 and 1.2 ohm pre-built pods.

The back side of the Argus G has “Designed by Voopoo” etched on the body. I can’t tell you how much I like the silver/black gradient effect on the version I received. It has a high polished look but is not a fingerprint magnet. Very well done. One side of the G contains the USB-C charging port used to charge the 1000mah internal battery at a rate of 5V/1A which should charge the battery completely in about an hour. The opposite side houses the sliding airflow control that has a series of round holes that are said to allow the user to go from a tight MTL to an RDL style of vaping. I personally found even with it open all the way with the .5 ohm ITO coil in the empty pod cartridge that it was still a bit tighter than what I like for an RDL and found myself still using it as a loose MTL.

The main side I want to focus on is the side with the OLED display screen and the fire button. The Argus G can be button fired or used in auto draw. The fire button also functions as the adjustment/menu button depending on the number of button presses. The display screen shows the following information.

    • Set Wattage
    • Battery level indicator
    • Coil Resistance
    • Lock/Unlock symbol
The button also allows you to operate the functions of the Argus G. Five presses of the fire button will turn on the G but will not turn it off. Once the G is on then in order to shut it off then you need to press the button 5X to enter the menu where you can shut the device off, reset the puff counter, or lock the fire button. To adjust the output you press the fire button 3X then the wattage number will flash then you can either single press or hold the button down to fast scroll the wattage. It will stop and give a warning when you reach the maximum wattage recommended for the installed coil or pod. This is a safety feature to help the user keep from overpowering the coil and burning the cotton. For example, the .7 ohm pod defaults to 16 watts when installed but if you try to go over 18 watts the mod will not allow it. If you press the fire button again then it will round robin and start back at 5 watts. Once the preferred wattage is set then you can either long press the button or just wait for it to stop flashing. I understand why this safety feature was included but for an experienced user I feel like it is a little bit of an over reach and would have liked to have seen a way to override it.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

So, did the Argus G live up to the hype? I think it did. It performed very well in my opinion with not only the two included pre-built pods but also with the empty pod cartridges and the spare .5 ohm ITO coils that were sent with the review sample. On any pod device, airflow control is always a great feature to have. This one has the airflow control on the side which in my opinion helped to prevent accidentally covering it with my hand when holding it. Second up is user adjustable output which is another great feature to have but is not all that common on these smaller pod devices. I have seen it on a few other pod devices but having a display screen and adjustable output is not all that common in a market flooded with one pod kit after the next.

I didn’t have any trouble using a 70vg/30pg mix in the .7 ohm pod that was included in this kit like I did with the same pod in the SE kit so will blame the trouble on a pre-installed coil that probably just had the cotton packed a little too tight. The flavor production on this one using a green tea and guava DIY mix was very good in my opinion. The amount of vapor produced was very respectable also. The wicking seemed to do very well with not recognizable dry hits. The pod did not leak and had no noticeable condensation. I’m not surprised since I’ve used the Argus pod cartridges across different devices. The G defaulted to 16 watts on this pod and I found that setting very good for my style of vaping.

I also used a 70vg/30pg NET tobacco mix with the 1.2 ohm pod and the flavor was ok but not great. I had the same results with the SE and this same pod. It did help some that I was able to adjust the wattage a little higher but never really got it where I wanted it due to the G restricting how high I could turn the wattage up. I feel like this pod could have handled a bit more wattage. The mod defaulted to 10 watts on this one but I turned it up to 13.

Lastly, I primed one of the .5 ohm ITO coils and installed it in one of the empty pod cartridges that I was sent and can be purchased separately. This was by far my favorite of the three that I tried. I used an orange tart DIY mix that was also 70/30. There was no issue with wicking and the flavor production was very good. The G defaulted to 23 watts but would allow adjustment up to the maximum output of 25 watts. I found the 23 watt setting very comfortable to use.

So, in closing I would like to say that I would probably recommend the Argus G to those looking for a versatile small pod device with a pretty good size battery for a device like this for out and about. Voopoo claims three days use on one charge of the 1000mah battery. I personally think that is a bit much but will in the end depend on each user’s frequency of vaping. I sometimes don’t understand why companies attempt to tell us how many days a device will last on a charge since it’s going to be different for different users depending on how much they vape.

I’d like to thank Voopoo and Nical for sending the Voopoo Argus G Pod kit for this review as well as the extra pods and coils. Thanks as always to the readers. I appreciate you taking the time to read my reviews. Below is a link to the Voopoo website for your viewing pleasure.

    Awesome review buddy.

I posted my video review yesterday and halfway thru getting ready for the written one.

I agree with many of your points, also used 70vg/30pg....nic salts just ain't for me,but my usual e-liquid worked flawlessly.

    Cheers amigo :)
Thanks! So are all the companies asking you to do a video and a written one? Seems like you've gotten yourself into twice the work.
Another good review, but I think I'm podded out.
    You're not the only one.

Hehe yeah it does seem like more work.
Depends on the brand, some i do dual reviews (video/written) and others just written.

I do get less volume work compared to you guys so it all evens out.

Just finished the written one for the Argus G,will wait a couple of days before i get started with the SE...gotta pace myself ;)
