Anything but tobacco, menthol, mint or wintergreen e-liquid is technically illegal in NY. You could probably get fined and have your vape taken away by customs.
I'd bring only cheap gear with compliant liquid to be safe. You can always track down flavored liquid in NYC after you're done with customs (ask vape shop workers for it; they won't keep it visible).
Another way to get flavored juice is to go to Connecticut. It's legal here, and very close to parts of NYC (e.g. ~20min from Yonkers to Greenwich, CT by car, maybe a subway even goes to CT), so that could potentially be another viable option for you.

So if I bring my vape and compliant liquid ie tobacco or menthol then it will be fine? Are there designated areas for vaping? Can you vape on the sidewalks/streets? I don’t want to get a fine or be arrested!!
I think you'll be fine.
Been many moons since I've visited NYC, or went through customs, but looking it up, I see that, these days, vaping is treated just like smoking. Which is insane, but what can we do?
So vaping is prohibited indoors (even inside bars) and it sounds like you'll rarely find designated areas to vape. There are designated smoke/vape free zones though, including parks and subways (and school zones, I would think), and "within 15 feet of a facility that provides health care." You also can't vape in your hotel room unless you get a smoking room.
Thankfully you can vape outdoors and on the sidewalks/streets at least.

Disposables are the king of illegal vaping. If you want to bring, say, a fruit, it might be wise to put it in an unmarked bottle.
