I bought a new ultrasonic cleaner to use w/DIY and to clean coils and turns out I am not going to use it. I put in classies but then realized since it was new in box I should "test" to make sure working.

Well, I thought it wasn't working, because it made buzzing type sounds, sort of like a large fish aquarium pump, so I told the person who wanted it that it must be not working.

Today, I took into my jewelry store, plugged it in for the owner, and she laughed and said "they all make noise. Some even rattle if the top rests over the edges.......some people put them into a picnic cooler and close the lid on that just so they don't have to listen to the humming, buzzing."

So, how much noise does your sonic cleaner generate? I guess as soon as I heard the acquarium pump like sound, I immediately thought the motor must surely be broken, I was expecting no sound or very little sound.

So, what are these supposed to sound like? :) Here is the one I have:

years and yeasr ago, when I was in the NAVY, we had a US cleaner that held about 2 gallons.

The noise wasw high pitched and so powerful that you had to wear ear protection (the big mickeys also used on flightlines) just to be in the same room and we could not do any work in the shop it was so loud.

Okay, well I was not expecting that noise.........so I guess I learned something.

Cvedrick, I BET that 2 gallon one WAS quite loud, I know there are some that people use to clean firearms and they are quite loud and powerful.

Rick, thanks for the info about the water level

Now I've read more about them, I see you can clean eyeglasses and even dentures in them! Coins and coils and atties, as well as juice bottles

what about steeping? Can they be used for that?

I bought mine for the soul purpose of steeping. It works very well. Put a bottle of mix in and it's ready in a few hours. I have a 2 quart type that you typically see in a dental or doctors office with a 30 minute timer and heat. Yes it does buzz but not as much where it's anoying. I can watch TV in the same room and the noise does not distract from the program. If it comes with a plastic basket use that it cuts down on the noise and keep the water filled to the max level. Also if you keep it lower then ear level (Like on the floor) that will also reduce the noise.

For more on UC steeping see this thread.

First of all, what you got is a sonic jewelry cleaner, it is not ultrasonic anything. A real ultrasonic vibrates at about 5 times the rate of a jewelry cleaner. If you want to clean e-cig hardware you want a real ultrasonic - not a jewelry cleaner.

Second, of course they all make noise. If they didn't have some method to create a vibration they couldn't do anything at all.

Ultra sound operates at 20–400 kHz which causes cavitation (bubbles) . I was at several sites that sell "jewelry cleaners" and they are called that, but use sonic waves to clean, as the above one does. So sonic waves are different than ultrasonic?

I know how a jewelry cleaner works, I have one, and it works by "circulating" water..........but this one above vibrates rapidly...it is not swirling water around.

Vaping review on La Sonic here:
Pup talks about La Sonic Jewlery Cleaner for atomizer cleaning - YouTube

Wish I had watched this........now I can hear how noisy they are LOL

By the way, keep in mind, Ultrasonic cleaning does not sterilize the objects being cleaned, because spores and viruses will remain on the objects after cleaning

okay, here's what I'm going to do. When I bought my property in the woods, a homestead had burned down on it on other side of forest. Since then, and many seasons of drought and rain, I"ve found TWO Silver Dollars over there (probably a lot more -- apparently people kept their $$ in jars or something )

They are very dirty and crusted......so I'll drop them in the sonic cleaner machine and report the results. I can't do this week but after Sept 20th and I"ll do before and after photos LOL

With an ultrasonic cleaner there is also a more pronounced buzzing with new water. I read somewhere thats due to the water being de-gassed or something like that. I have the $80 HF one, even after degass it produces a rather loud hiss. I have a cheapo walmart jewlery cleaner that is quieter but all that does is vibrate the container.

okay makes sense. I am gonna assume that you have to spend over $50 to get a decent ultrasonic and this one is probably not very good, so it will be retired after seeing how it cleans the silver dollars. :)

Thanks everybody for all the info

Racehorse, whats your target application for this? Is it to clean atomizer coils to extend their life, or juice steeping? If its both then ultrasonic is what you need. If its to clean atomizer coils, then what you have should be fine. Back in the day when my atomizers were 6-7 bucks apiece, I had excellent success with putting very hot water and a little white vinegar in a sonic cleaner and letting it run for 10-15 mins. Wasnt a spotless clean like ultrasonic, but was enough to knock off most of the atty gunk that had accumulated. Stick and old atomizer in what you currently have and you'll be surprised how many little black chunks are sitting on the bottom when youre done.

Nepenthy Orig thought I'd use to clean coils, then started DIY and realized it would have use there. Then decided not to use it at all and sell, then it sounded loud so decided not to stick anyone else with it, then this topic made me realize it is not even *ultra*........so where am I now?

I guess I will use to clean coils, some tools have, etc. Thanks for letting me know it works good on atty coils.

Racehorse yours is great for coil cleaning. You can do damage to coils in a powerful ultra sonic cleaner. The sonic waves can detach the coils creating a shorted{dead} atty.

what about shorty cartos? Sometimes I clean those once and use for 1/2 day again before I toss out. :)
