Hey all,

So before I dive into this "overall experience" let me first give a little bit of background leading up to now.

I've been an avid smoker of Marlboro Ultra Lights for quite a while. On average I'd say a 1 pack a day smoker.

I research the crap out of everything, and try to buy things or try new things locally first before ordering things on-line, getting other people's feedback and reviews, and understanding the concepts of a new technology.

About a week ago, I started questioning my overall health, and if I really wanted to continue to worry about developing lung cancer some day, and impairing my ability to workout and excercise, etc.... I also wasn't a fan of the "dry throat" and "seasonal bronchitus" so I decided to research an alternative solution. I thought to myself... there's GOT to be something out there that's legal, delivers nicotine, and is healthier than an "analouge."

That's when I found this forum. Upon further investigation of the forum, I started piecing together the bits and pieces of information regarding the components of the e-smokes, I saw countless reviews and opinions of people, e-liquid vs. dispospal cartridges etc. I even found the IRC channel and chatted with some of the guys for a while.

The people I spoke with on IRC, suggested I try the DSE 901, which as I seem to have read, is made by a LARGE # of different vendors, some being knock offs, some being good makes, etc. As of "the time of this writing" I still have not decided if I should order one of these, where to order a "decent" one, and / or if it's the "right" PV for me.

Needless to say, the e-cig deffinately intrigued me to the point of asking myself the question... "What's the worst that could happen... it could kill me? Bah... on with the show!" Living in the western burbs of Chicagoland, I decided to give a few smoke shops a call, and see if they had any "PV's" just so I could try it, see if I like it etc.

Lucky for me, I found a shop, right by the local mall. When I called them on the phone, they said they had 4 models, none of which i had read about or heard about before. I decided to go and take a look.

The real intent here, was not to find an "AWESOME" PV at this point... it was more of a proof of concept experiment to myself, to ponder the question "Is this for me? Will this work? Can I make the leap?" I KNEW AHEAD OF TIME, that whatever products that this shop was carrying... were likely to be made of cheap shoddy materials, overpriced, and mechanically (or rather electronically) unsound.

So the lady showed me these 4 brands. 3 were of the "Pen Style," which immediately turned me off. Fact is, I don't want something that long hanging out of my mouth, and analouge look alikes are heavy enough. So the only option she had available, was this brand called "Health e-Cigarettes!" Of course the lady was like "Oh... this very good brand, you like much, you come back tomorrow buy 10 more cartridges... you be happy..." Yea yea yea... ok lady....

#1, I never heard of this brand. But I thought screw it, let's try this thing out. Essentially it is a paper flip-top Cigarette Box look-alike, with green / white labeling. The "starter kit" so to speak, was just that... the box with 6 "menthol" flavored (more on that in a min) NON-NICATINE disposable cartridges. 1 White w/ Orange LED Li-Ion Battery, and 1 atomizer. On the bottom of the box, a little lever you push over which releases the 2 wall socket prongs you can use to plug the entire box into the wall to recharge. The Batt you have to screw into the hole in the box before it will charge.

Since this is my first review, it's hard for me to base my judgement off of anything else, however.... that being said... from everything I've read and people I've talked to, I think I can form an honest opinion of how I THINK it should work.

The Battery - This battery absolutely blows in my opinion.... A Full-Charge (which the instructions say should take 3 hours) actually only allows you to charge it for 20 mins before the light goes green. As a regular smoker, I tend to take an outdoor smoke break every 1 to 2 hours, usually smoking 1 sometimes 2 Ultra Light Cigarettes at a time, and averaging around 15-20 puffs per smoke. So NOW let's consider this. Using the same sort of scheduleing technique. I'd walk outside, and "attempt" to take 15-20 puffs before heading back in. GRANTED, I couldn't get the thing to activate most of the time without REALLLY SUCKING on it HARD and even then, it didn't light sometimes... but I'll explain more on that later. At this type of useage.... the battery lasted me only 5 trips outside, before it blinked at me and said "Sorry bub... I'm outta power..." Terrible in my opinion

The Atomizer - The atomizer in my opinion again... absolutely blows. Compared to some of the other "pictures" I've seen of other PVs, it's about 1/3 the size of any other atomizer. It's literally less than 1" in height. It has a "V" shaped connection that makes contact with the cartridge. When I put all the pieces together, and tried to take puffs on this thing (and mind you... I tried different cartridges, blanks, and low level nicotine carts)... almost 75% of the time, I couldn't get the LED to glow, and thus I was sucking pure air. Even when I COULD get it to light all the way, I'd have to keep sucking for what seemed like forever (probably 5 to 6 seconds) just to get a "LITTLE BIT" of actual smoke / vapor.

The Smoke - Pure and simple... NOT ENOUGH! Even when I could get the thing to perform, the amount of vapor, or smoke produced was not enough to give an appropriate "throat hit" that I was really looking for. I've seen images and videos of people with these things who have PVs that produce what appears to be an ample and comparable amount of vapor smoke.... and this thing just doesn't cut it. You get a "tiny" bit of vapor, not much else.

The Taste - Both the Non-Nicotine and The Low Level Nicotine cartridges I had were both "menthol" flavored, because that's all the store had. Both of these carts, in my opinion, didn't really taste like Menthol.... they tasted like pure MINT extract! I don't mind mint, but it seemed to me like it was too much of a wintery minty taste... like too strong or something. It wasn't incredibly terrible, just too much.

Cartridges - Low Level Nicotine carts. To be honest, I have no basis for my thought here, only what I "expected" to be an appropriate outcome that ended up being completely wrong and left me wanting. When I would smoke a normal ultra light cig, I would always have at least a small buzz or that "nicotined" feeling for a short bit. When I smoked this e-cig with the low-level nicotine carts, EVEN if I TRIED to really inhale or "smoke it like I meant it"... it left me with nothing, no satisfied crave, no buzz, no nothing. It might just be me, but I thought one of the whole points of these things were also to satisfy that nicotine crave. Didn't happen.

Overall, I think this vendor is garbage. If it weren't for the fact that I pretty much knew I was going to get a junk product before I actually tried it... I probably would have said Screw the whole e-cig thing, I'm going back to the traditional method.

That being said, I'm still looking and needing opinions on a product I "SHOULD" consider getting with the following in mind: Should produce a good throat hit, should be the same size and closely resembles that of an actual cigarette, should produce AMPLE smoke, should have good quality parts and a decent lasting battery, should at least be able to satisfy a basic nicotine crave, should reliably "light" and be puffed on like a regular cigarette.

Cheers.

I read the forums for a day solid and choose the m401 series from litecigusa, the amount of "smoke" is awesome. The batterys last all day, and I bought extra ones just in case.

Monday I ordered "juice" I just got it like 30 mins ago, along with 2 passthrus. I grabbed a old cart, and dropped in a few drops of "virginia" 16mg and am hitting it, first taste was not that great, but I am liking it more with each drag.

Point being, for around $35 you can get a really good m40* series starter kit, toss in a few $5 bottles of liquid, and a $20 passthru and your set. I live in milwaukee and we are paying $6.30 a pack of smokes, a carton is $60.00. So I got no problem spending $200.00 on e-smoking stuff when I spend that a month on analog cigs.

For the $200 I have spent, I have a ton of supplies.

4-atomizers
24- high marlboro pre filled carts
20 old used carts
50ml of 24mg unflavored juice
4 bottles of flavored juice
4 M401 batterys
2 USB passthrus

Time to throw away my ash trays..............:)

Interesting...

I'd be curious to here some other people's thoughts / opinions. Really I want something that meets all of the following, the other stuff I mentioned above is just a nice to have but below are the musts:

1) I don't want have to suck on the thing like I'm trying to get a lemon seed jammed in a straw out. It should be as close to natural as possible

2) I want a good throat hit with plenty of smoke... none of this wimpy 1/2 a second smoke you can barely see... literally, I feel like the one I tried was comparable to one of those old school candy cigarettes you can puff on with the powdered sugar.

3) I want something that satisfies the nicotine crave sufficiently, can produce the "buzz" effect so to speak, etc.

Thanks guys!

I felt pretty much the same as justaguy0 with my first e-cig (m401). Don't let your first experience put you down. I myself had to buy 4 different models before I found one that suited me. M401->BLU->DSE901->JOYE510, and then some little mods like cart stuffing PCC modding and made my own juice and finnally got a recipy down that I love. Now there's no way I'de go back, this thing puts out a cloud of vapour I love and tastes just perfect! Only down side is the darned battery life and I'm slowly looking into mods for this. It might look ugly but damn 20+ hours lol.

If you have some $ to spare, I'de say buy a single atomizer and battery from top brands you want to try and make your pick. E-Liquid can make a BIG difference too keep that in mind.

Good luck and don't give up, its worth it!

I get tons of smoke, just like a real cig.

I only had 30 carts with my first order so i was holding back trying to make them last I guess, once I put in another order I went ahead and started smoking it like i would a real cig and they can and do satisfy the cravings. Now I got this liquid and I am not jonesing for that morning cig.

I am about to do 3 drops of trukish with 1 drop of 24mg for a bump. I think 16mg is to low, and I was smoking ultra lights.

Rule of Thumb: the more it looks like the real thing, the worse the performance and reliabilty.

For consistency and ease of use, I would suggest you stick with a MANUAL battery PV (personal vaporizer). Joye 510 or Manual (not auto) DSE901. Then there are the premiere devices that are the top of the food chain. But if you are more concerned about looks than performance, then you probably would not want to consider one of these.

So what exactly is the big difference / mechanical benefits of a MANUAL battery vs. auto?

A Co-worker of mine is also intrigued by my new (although severely crappy) e-cig, and we're both trying to research the crap out of products.

HE really likes the idea behind the "Vapor King" products he saw on vapor4life.com, mostly because he doesn't feel like wasting time refilling carts, and more so that product line because the cartridge packs come pre-quipped with new atomizers on every cart.

Me on the other hand, my hands are still up in the air. What's really confusing is the fact that even If I said, "I'm gonna try a DSE 901" there's all these different vendors and sites you can order it from, and no way for me to tell which is legit, and which is a fake knock-off of some kind. I kind of like the idea behind just replacing carts because it's a "controlled" and correctly measured snap in replacement, but at the same time if I knew I could purchase "juice" that took me hardly "no-time" to re-fill... then I would probably consider it.

As of right now, my hands are still in the air, because I don't have a good feel for "legit" vendors vs. fake knock-offs. If battery life isn't that great, but the smoke, throat hit, nicotine supply is good, then I could go for that. It's not really the "looks" so to speak, but rather the flexability of the device. Something that's the size of my arm is totally non-practical. Something I can walk around with hanging out my mouth... that's more practical.

Ok, here goes:

Auto-bats are extremely unreliable, and can easily be set off when you don't mean them to. Ask anyone that rides a motorcycle about that one. (Agnes you around still?)

Manual bats will give you the same experience every time. Provided you keep your carts wet that is.

As for pre-filled carts, they are great in theory. Topping off carts can be a pain. However, that being said, you save HUGE amounts of money by reusing your carts, and filling them yourself. We're talking a lot here.

Thanks Jim,

And Thanks everyone for your responses. Talk about an information overload. What's so hard for me to believe, is HOW many people actually have converted, yet, if It weren't for the fact of me "stumbling" across some information on the web... I would have NEVER even thought it existed! I have to say, I don't think there's a ton of Chicagoland folk yet that even know about this.

Going back to the point at hand though. As I understand it, there's also 2 different models of DSE 901s, there's the original brand, and then the RN4075 one which they say is a better knock off. What's the major differences between the RN4075 and the JOYE 510? Strictly performance wise... I don't need all the nitty gritty about the atomizer being of a certain length etc... just what makes the JOYE 510 or the RN4075 a better choice? And where can I buy one or the other from a legitmate (non-knock-off) site? Also am I correct in assuming that if you buy a model that supports carts you can "re-fill" you have your choice of either re-filling the carts yourself, or just buying replacement pre-filled carts as well? Or is it only 1 or the other?

Get a 510 it's hot, you can hit it like a normal cig, and buy higher nicotine. Just because you smoked lights does not mean low nic juice.

Takes a few days to get used too.

Manual is the way to go, you hold a button, and it keeps that E-liquid a cooking. You can let it heat up for a sec or two before you start to take a drag on it too which makes all the difference in the world.

All 510s are the say with different names on them. Totally Wicked offers a MEGA battery, and two of them last me all day. They are longer than normal batteries tho.

I vape 36Mg. and sometimes 24mg but mostly I just stick with 36Mg.

The way I vape, and like many other is just droping E-Liquid into the atomizer. This way you don't have to deal with refilling carts at all. Just pull all the stuffing out of them.

Now an atomizer is going to last about 2-4 weeks. They do wear out. Yet, they are not that much in bulk buying. Say if you replaced it every 2 weeks it's 5 dollars.

2 or 3 drops of high E-Liquid 24Mg-36Mg is about 1 Cig.

Before I start this is based on my experience of one week

you're not going to get huge battery life with something that looks like a cig, but I can go from leaving the house in the morning to walking out of work in the afternoon on one manual battery (I keep the auto for the ride home) so that's probably the equivalent of 7-8 cigswith my 510 (possibly 10 as I think I smoke longer on the e-cig)

I have bought a usb pass through which allows me to smoke all evening no probs at home.

The hit you're looking for comes from the right strength of nicotine liquid. When I first started on the e-cig I has headaches for 2 days that I though were because the 14mg strength was too strong for me, so I bought some glycerine and cut the two flavours I liked down to 7mg, which was great for those two days (I never want to smoke as much when I have a headache) but once they stopped the cravings weren't being satisfied and I have had to use the not so nice liquid while I wait for a delivery, even then I don't think the 14mg is really hitting the spot really, just enough to keep me going.

The moral of that little story is; buy some strong e-liquid and some glycerine from the baking aisle, play around with the strength until you get the right strength for you, even if you never plan on mixing your own liquid again (If I were starting over I would buy a 36mg bottle, try some cut 6:1 (6mg) some cut 3:1 (12mg) some cut 2:1 (18mg) and some cut 3:2 (24mg) which will allow you to try the range of strengths that are generally available for sale)

You need to get the Joye 510 and e-liquid. Not only is the draw so smooth and easy with the Joye 510, but it is everything you want from a PV that mimics real cigarette smoke.

I bought mine from Healthcabin Electronic Cigarettes - Wholesale and Retail and it's great. I got it last week.

Also, you can opt to buy a PCC (Personal Charging Case). This is what I did. It's like a little cigarette box that holds your cartridges, atomizer, and battery. The battery gets charged from this box. You never have to worry about having a dead battery on the go.

Edit: Also buy the flat whistle tips for it. It's easier to draw on and you get great vapor production.

Long post but I figured you might benefit from my recent experience. I was in the same boat as you not very long ago. One of the guys I play poker with showed up one night with his new Blu. I had never heard of an e-cig at all and I was pretty fascinated with the concept.

Next week he shows up at the game with a new 510. Says he likes this model much better and I tried it out and thought it was pretty cool. He was telling me he was smoking less than half of the normal amount of cigs he used to smoke. That was enough to convince me to try to buy one myself as I was just plain tired of being a traditional smoker.

Intrigued, I started doing a lot of reseach. I'm very much like you in the sense that I will scour the internet for reviews of any purchase I make. I figure it will save me a lot of headaches in the long run if I do my due diligence in finding the best product. I eventually stumbled upon this site and I have to admit at first I was pretty overwhelmed. There was a ton of types of pv's being discussed not to mention having to learn a myriad of terms from pv, e-juice, atty's, carts, dripping, pg, vg etc etc.

I probably spent about a week just pouring over the forums trying to figure out everything I could and also helping determine what to buy. Almost every review I found of the 510 with the manual battery was very positive, including throat hit and vapor production. I too wanted something that would mimic the act of smoking a regular cig. Having seen and used my friends I felt comfortable going that route. I purchased it from the same vendor he did knowing that he had a good experience.

I got it about a week ago and was happy with the initial purchase since it includes two batteries, two atomizers, charging unit, and 5 pre-filled carts. I enjoyed the experience very much at first. The one thing I realized is the battery life is pretty short on the 510. So I recently ordered a PCC which is a personal charger. I haven't received it yet but from what I hear it's the way to go. The other thing I didn't like was that the prefilled carts were horrible in the sense that they would dry out very quickly. So my next mission was to do research on e-juice which is not a small task in and of itself.

I finally found a place that got really good reviews and decided to purchase a 30 ml 24 mg bottle of straight tobacco flavor as well as a bunch of empty carts. I had done a lot of reading about all the different flavors but I was kind of unsure if I would enjoy those. After getting the juice I immeditally realized this was the only way to go. The taste was much better and it lasted far longer than the prefilled carts. Not to mention increased vapor production. All you need to do is top them off a bit here and there. I smoked my last regular cig yesterday morning and haven't had a desire for another one since. It really does an amazing job of making me feel like I'm smoking.

I ordered a handful of other juices recently included one or two fruit flavors and assorted mix of tobacco ones. I haven't received that yet so I can't comment on them. I also went a bit crazy on the accessories and am waiting for a usb charger, the pcc, an additional battery etc.

All in all, I found some pretty reliable vendors for the juice and parts. If you are interested in who they are I'll be more than happy to share. It's the reviews of these places that make me comfortable enough to take the plunge and order them online.

Another "convert" to manuals from the old auto's. Good to see.:)

To the OP, the 510 is a very good device. You can now also get the DSE901 with MANUAL batteries. Here are some very reputable suppliers of both along with some of the others you have been given:
