Forgive me if this has been asked before. I just got a tc mod the other day, a vex 75, and I've been fighting with it since. Started with nickel wire, could wrap a cool to save my life. It read the atomizer really inconsistently. Yesterday I got some 316l ss wire which fixed that problem. Now I have another one. The temp protection cuts it off 100- 150 degrees lower that what I've set. If it's set under 470 I get about a one second hit before it shuts down to practically nothing. I'm just getting so frustrated by this thing, I'm about to throw it through a window.

Which mod is it?? Does it have a SS316L setting or did you put the correct TCR value in? Setting wattage too high should make no difference, it should just hit temp faster!
It's a vex75. It has a ss316 setting, thats what I've been using. I seem to have found the problem. I put it in TCR mode, which defaults to 120, and got much better results. So I went on steam engine and just started pugging in the TCR values for the different alloys. It seems this 316L wire I had been sold is actually ss430! this is why I don't like brick and morters.

I am mistaken. That didn't fix the problem. it just reads the temp so low that protection never kicks in.

When you don't know the alloy you have but you can read temp changing on the device then you can just wing it:

Try starting with a custom TCR of 92 (roughly SS 316L), with 450F and whatever power you'd usually use in power mode. If the temp control kicks in before the end of your draw then raise the TCR value a tad and try again. If you never reach 450F then lower your TCR and try again. You can basically hone in on the proper TCR by matching against a fixed reasonable vaping "temperature".

At this point I am thoroughly convinced this device is not functioning properly. I took it to my usual vape shop to get some help troubleshooting my build. he did find an issue with the atomizer, but when he put it on hid rig it gave a completely different result. put it back on mine and nothing. maybe I'm wrong and this is how its supposed to work. as soon as it hits temp protection it drops down to maybe 1 watt. the lower the temp the quicker it cuts out. I keep flooding the atomizer trying to keep the wicks wet enough fire all the way through. I'm not getting any useful information from the shop that sold it. apparently 40 watts isn't enough power, and you have to wait for the coil to cool to room temp before taking a second hit. of course this is the same guy who thought my titanium dioxide concern is about flavor, and that my 20A continuous draw efest battery should never be used because its a button top. apparently flat tops breath better.

Well, I'm not sure if it's been asked yet, but are you spacing your coils? 316L will not give you accurate temp protection unless you're using spaced coils.

Also, on a side note, where as the shop's sales rep is likely full of it about your efest battery not being able to breathe or whatever, he's right that you probably shouldn't be using that cell. All efest batteries are rewraps, so you never know what cell you're actually using under that wrap. Is it rated at 20a on the wrap? If so, it's likely only 10a (which isn't a big deal if you're not pulling any more than that, obviously.) Check out Mooch's tests on those batteries, you might find them interesting.

You'd be much safer buying a well-known battery (like a Samsung/LG/Sony) from a reputable seller that tests all cells in their batches (like from illumn.com). I'm not trying to school you or anything, just trying to keep ya safe!

Yesterday I purchased an itaste hunter from from a shop I know is good, put the same atty same build on it with none of the problems I have with the vex75. It's definitely the device.

I only have the one efest battery, I mainly use samsung 25Rs. the efest battery I have is rated to 30A on the wrap, so I've been treating it as a 20A cell. I rarely run higher than 10A so I don't worry about it.

Good stuff. The hunter looks nice, was considering grabbing one for my brother a few months ago. Glad you got it all sorted!

I use 316L in TC with contact coils all the time. It works just fine on my Joyetech, Wismec, Innokin and DNA mods.
