So I got my first roll of SS 316L wire. Wiped some off with alcohol and built a coil. Question is, do I need the preheat the coil to burn off any residue or can I start vaping right away after wicking up and priming the wick? Thanks in advance for any responses. By the way, using it in temp control on evic mini vtc.

I just use it like Kanthal, wrap a coil get it glowing evenly an viola, good to go, I use the ud 316l and mine came nice and clean. I do clean the TI first though as you can see the little black marks on a paper towel from it. You might want to try playing with the TCR with 3.0 update rather than the SS316l setting on the evic for a even better result.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I found .0110 on the tcr seems to work well.

Another question if I may, how long are your ss coils lasting? Are you dry burning them when they get gunked up, the same as if it were kanthal? And then rewicking?

HD

SS can last up to a month, even if you rewick it every 2-3 days.

I dry burn it orange hot multiple times until the coil is clean, then rewick it.

With SS coils make sure you pulse them until they are done hot-spotting. I have a set of ss coils that have lasted for two and a half months (since I started using SS) without any noticeable degradation. I vape clear juices and use rayon, so my wicks last 120-240 ml of juice before I have to rewick + dry burn.
Switching to stainless steel resistance wire has really improved my vaping experience. My builds all work equally well for TC or mech use now.

I built my first stainless coil on Friday for an SV rda clone. I shoot for 1 ohm in TC. My perception is I need less power with stainless compared to titanium. May be I get more throat hits. Can't say if the flavor is better. The build worked as normal on my iStick 50 which I hadn't touched since last July. I haven't tried a dry burn for cleaning, that's next. Sofarsogood.

can someone point me to a decent place to buy a roll of SS 316l or the like? I bought a roll of the UD 26G and love it. I just wish I could find the same thing in a larger roll... I keep finding .030 and .035 and larger wire online, but that is 20G and larger!! would like to stay around 24 or 26G...

All my local welding shops sell either flux cored or copper plated wire. neither of which will work...

Or you can purchase the canister spools direct from Malin Co. I would opt for products actually used as surgical wire (e.g. suture wire) for 316L. SouthPointe offers 316L manufactured and drawn (Babcock) in Germany. Delco Wire Winding offers 316L manufactured and drawn (Babcock) in the USA. Both are delivered wound on wooden spools.
