Not a good battery for a mechanical mod. ICR chemistry batteries tend to explode when they vent and the battery only has a CDR of 5.4A.

You are going to want a safe-chemistry, high-drain battery with a high CDR. How high? I try to never exceed 50% of the CDR (continuous discharge rating) of a fully charged battery (4.2v). So with a 20A battery, that would be 10A. This Ohm's Law Calculator tells me that a 0.4 ohm build is as low as I would want to use.

The reason that I place a 50% limit is because as a battery ages the mAh of the battery degrades, as the mAh degrades so does the batteries c rating (amp limit). So down the road, a 20A battery may only be a 10A battery."

With a 30A battery (like the Sony VTC4) I would only build as low as 0.28Ω.

I highly recommend you spend some time with @Baditude (one of our resident battery/safety experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditude's Blog - Table of Contents: The blogs that address battery safety, Ohm's Law, CDR (continuous discharge rating/Amps) and how they all work together are detailed below:

BATTERIES

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

I just got a Smoktech Magneto from a buddy of mine, with no batteries; it also has a igo-w drip tank. The only batteries I have are samsung icr18650-26F.... Will I die if I use it?

You do not want to use that battery for that device. Hopefully you understand that is a mechanical mod and battery safety is your most important safety precaution as it could vent and cause harm or worse. I know that battery has a 5 amp discharge and from what I've read, should not be used for vaping. Especially with a dripper. Do you wrap coils or have someone do it for you? Do you know what ohm(s) you're vaping at? Have you looked into battery safety at all or have used an ohms law calculator? Important ?s to answer before progressing further with a mech mod. I swear I don't mean to be harsh;) just want some background help myself and others fully understand.

i have a smok magneto and i use it with some 25rs
25rs are good with a 20 CDR. I have three and love them! You can find them for 5.00 + shipping from Illumn.com (mentioned above by Susan ~S). I really wanted to get the magneto as it looks good but the telescoping aspect turned me off for some reason. How does the magneto hit??

I have a Magneto. It was my first mod when I switched from egos. I love it. It's still in rotation. I put Sony VTC4's in it and never had a problem with dual coil KA1 builds. I don't know how it would hold up to a super sub build. I never pushed it below about .4 ohms. At that point the top cap would start to warm up if I chain vaped it. Keep the threads clean though or the switch will burn the piss out of your pinky. Lol!

I had a magneto as my second mechanical mod. I took it apart to torch it. The threads on the plastic plug that holds the spring wore out eventually the plug slipped and contacted the fire button while it was sitting the table. I didnt notice until the battery (vtc4) vented through the atomizer. Scared the crap out of me. Keep an eye on the plastic plug. If you notice that the throw is getting short, tighten it. I haven't torched the body of any mech mods since then. I also tend to go for the simplest mech mods with the fewest parts...

What does it mean to torch a mod?

This is the magneto I was talking about. You can heat the stainless to different temperatures to get different colors.

This one I took all the way to blue, sanded down and did a light fade with the torch.
