Hi and welcome,
I would put a piece of cello tape on that and then try to figure out where/how the damage is occurring.
What mod/charger are you using?
You can also buy some battery wraps and recover them if needed.
I replace my batteries about every 12-15 months and will have generally re wraped each cell twice.

I use a nitecore i2 charger and a smok mag vape, is there a reason to use cello tape specifically? I usually see people tell others to use electrical tape but Im still unsure about what to do, do I wrap the tape around the the battery once in that spot or do I just covet it with a small bit of tape?

Those batteries are unsafe to use if the covering is scratched off. They can short out and go into thermal runaway (VERY bad). As Izan mentioned you can buy shrink wrap covers to re-wrap it. FastTech has some really cheap but it takes a long time to get them from China. I'd buy a few with ASAP shipping, then stock up from FastTech.

Definitely examine your mod and handling practices to see what caused that too.

I use cello tape because it is very thin and often will not change the DIA of the battery much.
Some devices have very tight battery tolerances and a wrap of Electrical tape or a double wrapped cell no longer fits.
Since you have the MAG and the cells are loaded into a sled, they should be isolated enough from each other to avoid direct contact.
I might suggest a touch of lubricant on the slides of the charger and extra care when inserting and removing cells from the I2.
I have had my nitecore launch cells if I am not mindful of the force of the springs/slides.

A local vape shop should have cheap battery wraps for under a dollar each.

Cheers

A rewrap may be ideal but some tape to cover it would probably be alright until you can get wraps and etc. I will say, that almost looks like something (if you had a magnetic and possibly metal cover) where it just got incidentally scratched as the cover came off, I had that happen once . It could be a for a variety of reasons, but my Nitcore 2bay intellecharger had really rough sleds when I first got it. They eased up over time, but some lubricant wouldn't have been a bad idea retrospectively. You can also stretch the sleds a bit so they're less springy.

If electrical tape will fit in the mod, that's probably just fine to use but if your mod and your batteries are a tight fit to begin with, well, then using something thinner may be useful. As long as it's protected though, you should be fine.

I had an IPV-5 that was just murder on my batteries, even with a ribbon. I ultimately retired it for that reason, it was just such a tight fit (it still works).

Just generally exercising due caution can help a lot, too.. The more I learned about batteries, well the more careful I learned to be with them and etc.

Good luck and glad you asked the question.

When I took out my batteries this morning to charge I noticed that a bit of the plastic covering in the middle of the batteries was a little peeled off/scratched off on both, are they safe to use? Do I get new ones or what do I do? Thanks in advance lads.
Hi there, I'm new to ecf but I do know unwrapped batteries are unsafe. All the suggestions I've read are sound but I might also suggest taking the batteries to your local vape shop and get them to help, they may give you some wraps and point you in the right direction as to how to do it

Hi Filip Herian. Welcome to the ECF

You should Never use a Battery when the Battery Wrap around the Battery is Torn or Damaged. If you can See any Metal, it's time to Re-Wrap the Battery.

Battery Wraps are Very Inexpensive. And you usually buy them at a Vape Shop. Or from people who Sell 18650 Batteries. Or on e-Bay or Amazon.

Here is an Example...

Wraps - 18650 Wraps - IMRbatteries.com

Re-Wrapping a Battery is pretty simple. And all you need is Three things. Some Battery Wraps (Duh!). A Hair Blow Dryer. And a Pair if Scissors to Trim the Battery Wrap if need.

Here is a Thread where people posted on how to Do It.

Rewrapping 18650s hints and tips?

There are also a lot of YouTube Vids out there on Re-Wrapping Batteries.

Good information and advice given. Do not use yhr cells untjll they are made safe. Find out the cause if you can. Sometimes older batteries wraps get brittle. Yes a reputable b&m will usually wrap for free. They want you alive and well to facilitate future purchases. Good luck. May the force be with you.

Some clear lacquer (nail polish) prudently applied can deter a wrap from shredding in a pinch. Or, temporarily plug pinholes as they occur. Can work as good as crazy glue. Until such time as a wrap and opportunity allow it. Best to assess those critters tho. Keep sketch ones to low pwr use till. Spec the ones that look fine. Too easy to lose track of 'em and it's not worth it.

Good luck. :)

Here's a big supply for $9 on amazon that's not coming from China (I got this pack) and if you have prime, free shipping. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016F50SJG

(Note the Smile address to Amazon is how you tell them to donate part of their profits to a charity of your choice, it is not a scam address.)

Are your battery wraps and insulator rings intact?

Why Repairing Batteries With Cracked Wraps Is Absolutely Essential

Battery tears

You might ask why do battery manufacturers use such a fragile wrap? Well, remember, the 18650 batteries we use for vaping were never intended to be used like we use them. They were designed to be used only in battery packs for the auto industry and power tool industriy...never intended to be removed and re-inserted frequently like we vapers do. They become available from overstock supplies and are then sold to middleman battery suppliers.

I just bought these about two months ago. They seem like good quality, some are a little long, and may need to be snipped.
