howdy - and welcome! i believe that pass-through vaping while charging is not necessarily good for the board or the batteries, in general - given that usb charging is going to be capped at 1A or less... since i work from home a lot, i ended up doing some research and getting a buddy to help me put together a 'vape station' using a pc power supply (CoolerMaster g750 - 750w/ 62A) with dual outputs - i run a pair of dna200 boxes directly off the power supply (since they accept direct 12v input) - also have an early version (old pc gaming psu) with a single output that will run same boxes (it capped out at 38A, so i elected not do do dual outputs - i also use it to run a 'build station' we made with an elevated 510 and dna200 board for coil building/ installs)...

hopefully some folks with more experience with the pass-through charging/ vaping aspect will weigh in, though

I used to use one of these. Pass-through on a modern box mod isn't really practical or advised.

Hey all, i wanted to know what you all considered to be the best box mods that offer pass through charging and an internal battery. I currently run an ipv3 li 200w, but i find myself vaping at about 40-50 watts. i also vape most in my car and around my pc, and therefore, i really want something to vape while i charge. Thanks all
Welcome and glad you joined.
Not sure, but i believe most built in battery mods use a Li Po chemical based battery.
I see some advertisers claim a duel Li Po internal configuration, whatever that means.
For LI Po info: http://thedronegirl.com/2015/02/07/15-things-every-lipo-battery-user-should-know/

Since you want to go to 40-50w, you will deplete the 2K mAh cell in pretty short order w/o charging. Could look at these sites for over 50 w mods: Ecig Mods with Built-In Batteries:Best Vape Mods 2016 — Reviews, Guide and More

Might want to read through this: http://..................com/thread...safely-be-used-in-a-vapor-shark-rdna30.11656/

I'm guessing you want a plugged in mod for every day use and the capability of being portable if need be. You are at such a high wattage use that internal battery design may not be the way to go portability wise.

You might have to bite the bullet and go with the expense (chargers, wraps, batteries, meter, etc) of carrying around sets of external batteries for a non internal battery box mod.

I use an istick 30w for longer car trips...seems to work fine. I think they discontinued that for the 40w TC model. I believe most box mods will work as a passthru, but it is not normally recommended. I would prefer to take 2, charging one and using the other.

If I were going to do a passthru, I would first decide how I would use it. Do you want to stand it up next to your computer? if so you will need it to plug in on the side, not the bottom. But for in the car, I would prefer the plug on the bottom.

Hi Walrus and welcome.
Your question has me a bit confused. You've got a very nice mod and are willing to purchase another. With two such dual battery mods why would you ever need to use a pass through? On top of that you really should be using an independent battery charger anyway so wouldn't it be more practical and cheaper just to buy additional batteries?

I don't think an internal battery is the best way to go since you could loose the mod simply because a battery dies, why take the risk? The Teslacig's are mostly internal batteries which is why I don't own one.

I use my iSticks on passthru anytime I want a vape and its charging. But I let loose the cord when possible. In particular, it would be bad to leave one plugged all the time because it will "top up" the battery, charging it to max, every time you stop vaping, which is not at all good to a lithium battery. In fact, if mine's been charging and is almost done and the wall charger feels cool to the touch, I go on and unplug it then to avoid max charging.

Most people seem to harbour the misconception that when using a mod that supports 'passthrough', the required current to vape comes from the charge port - it doesn't - it still comes from the battery.

If you think about it - most mods these days charge at around 0.8-1A, and the batteries we use have to be good for up to around 20A of continuous discharge - around 20-25 the amount of current. There's simply not enough current coming in the charge port to vape with, especially on modern devices.

I also think as someone else pointed out that it's not good for the life span of cells to vape on a full battery that is being constantly charged back up to 4.2V - it's well known that charging cells up to 4.05V instead of 4.2V gives around 2x the charge cycles and offers about 90% of the capacity of a full charge - a trade-off that seems well-worth it to me, at least.

There still are some of those devices like sonicbomb posted an image of that plug into a USB and let you vape from them, but even they need at least a 2.5A power supply to work properly, and to be used with very low-power toppers, like the old EVODs and CE4-style ones.

I think, as another poster also said, that it makes more sense to have another 'backup' mod to vape on while the other is charging, rather than trying to use them in 'passthough mode'.

This is also, IMO, another good reason to always use mods that have replaceable batteries in them, so that one cell or set of cells can be charging while the other(s) are being used in the mod.

There's also the great shame of all those otherwise-OK mods with dead cells that are being landfilled every day.

Agreed, this is why I have one of each.(well actually only the istick with built in) and a few with replaceable. I just like the size, it's easy to toss in a top pocket, dependability, if I drop it or it gets lost it's easy and cheap to replace, and ease of use of the istick40. It'll prolly go in the next year or 2 and I'll prolly grab another just for those reasons. Cheers.
