I am getting tired of changing batteries constantly, and decided to look at battery mods. Boy, was I surprised when I found that they are all way over-priced imho.

I may be overlooking something, but basically these mods are very much like flashlights. I do understand the concept of low volume raising the price; but really now; $50.00 for the cheapest one out there and it doesn't include a battery or charger? It is also possible (probable even) that there is one I haven't seen that is reasonable.

Basically, I would think that a mass produced system should be no more than $20.00, if that. I can see personal ones to be a little more; but not by a lot.

Sorry, just venting a little. I will probably go the route of making my own; knowing that I'll probably screw something up several times.

Some mods are over-priced in my opinion, but certainly not all. They aren't overpriced when you consider that many of them can easily last for years upon years, and the batteries you put in them are cheap to replace. An eGo battery costs 20 bucks, and it's almost certainly going to fail within a year. A battery you'd put in a mod costs less than half that.

Mods are an investment, but if you plan to vape long-term, they're actually a pretty good investment. That's the thing - standard e-cigs are basically disposable. Mods can actually last you for a while. Some of them can even last a lifetime.

Check out Ken's Boxs Mods. He has a great reputation, and some very affordable mods. A basic box mod is 27 bucks.

For a step up in durability, Mad Vapes sells a complete RoughStack kit (batteries, charger and all) for $75

I personally would spend a little more on a charger - 15 bucks will get you a decent one with overcharge protection. But, if you do go for a cheap battery charger, please keep an eye on it and take your batteries off the charger immediately when they are done. These types of chargers usually don't have over-charge protection, and that can be dangerous to your batteries if they are left in the charger for too long.

Also, the one area with mods where you *never* want to skimp is batteries. They should always be LiMN, LifePO4, or protected Li-Ion. Yes, those are more expensive, but you're holding the thing 2 inches from your face. Unprotected batteries can and do explode. And this has really happened to people who have used cheap and/or unprotected batteries, and there have been injuries. It's worth the extra couple bucks, to make sure this doesn't happen to you.

EDIT: Just saw your posts jcleaver - good buy! I was responding to cskent, more or less.

You posted as I was typing a response. I've got a Maxi Roughstack and it's built very well, it's machined aluminum with no circuit board to give problems and the parts are user replacable. You made a good choice. If you plan on doing 6v in the future, just add the 16340 batt's and a HV atty and you're set, your charger will do them as well.

A really great little box mod is a Bartleby Bartleby. For $50 you get it an 2 14500 Protected 3.7v Li-Ion Batteries. The neat thing about the Bartleby is that it has a built in charger. I have had one for about 4 months now and have never even had to take the back off. I just plug it into a mini usb cord when I am at my laptop and use it as a pass-through as it re-charges itself. It is just a tiny 3.7 box mod and does not look like much but Cybervex does really high quality work.
