I think most people here report that they have an awful cough that starts within a couple weeks of stopping smoking, that gets rid of the tar buildup in their lungs. How come that never happens with some that have been smoking for decades? I can't find anyone who can answer it on the Net and haven't seen it addressed here. Does anybody know?

I did not suffer the dreaded cough nor did my room mate. However, we were both several months into rolling out own cigarettes with additive free (As additive free as you can get anyway) loose tobacco. When I spoke to my doctor about the lack of cleansing cough as well as not noticing much difference in taste either, I was promptly told that when you get away from factory cigarettes this can happen. Not to say that rolling our own was any healthier, but I did notice that a few months into rolling my own I was tasting everything better. I was also told that factory cigarettes have tobacco that is chopped so fine that a form of glue is added to the tobacco so that it doesn't fall out of the cigarette tubes. Now how gross is that???? Apparently we have all been smoking glue along with all of the other nasty chemicals. For us at least the coughing and taste bud improvement was mostly solved when we switched to rolling our own. I can't speak for others, but hopefully this helps you out.

Myself:
2 packs a day for 10 years, Pall Mall Light 100s - coughed before I quit but not at all after.

My husband:
1 pack a day for 6 years, Pall Mall Light 100s - no cough before or after quitting.

My brother:
3+ packs a day for 20some years, cheapest nastiest full flavored cigs around. Coughed before quitting but not after.

I've heard of the "cleansing cough" but don't know anyone who has actually experienced it. Go figure.

good to hear there are others who have not coughed, I am 2 weeks into stopping and effects have been distorted sleep and extraordinarly dreams (only one about smoking in which I found a packet a B&H - never smoked them - in my hand with one cigarette missing and threw the packet away in disgust) and no cough AT ALL so was starting to worry. What is vaping?

I started coughing a lot after FSC was added to the cigarettes. That's when I started looking into E Cigs. After I started vaping, the nagging cough actually went away, thank god. I still haven't completely gotten off cigarettes smoking five or six a day generally. That's down from 2.5 packs a day. I now either smoke cigarettes from Virginia which hasn't added the FSC yet (or at least not the last time I was down and bought some) or American Spirits which are supposedly additive free. I own a house down there and live most of the time in PA.

A few days ago, I had the urge to smoke more than usual and probably went up to a half pack a day. The coughing started up again and I'm back to much more vaping a cigarette avoidance.

One of these days.........

Good golly miss mollie, you dont know what vaping is 8-o If you quit smoking without it then good for you but if you feel like starting back up you really need to learn more about vaping.

I was a heavy smoker for well over a decade going from pk/day camel wides for years, then 2pks/day parliaments for a few years, then finally ~pk/day rolled smokes for the last two years or so and have always had a very productive (read:disgusting) morning and night smokers cough that could leave me dizzy if I really went for it and cleared out all the crap rattling around.

When I quit cold for a little while two years ago the cough went away after about a week and when I started up again it came back in about two weeks. I started the e-cigs about two weeks ago and the coughing/hacking is practically nonexistent now so I'd say it's about the same as when I quit cold although there is a little throat dryness and whatnot.

My ex-girlfriend smoked a pack a day of unfiltered lucky strikes for years and she never had any kind of cough, damn her. :p

I think the question we need to ask is how badly the cilia have been damaged. We know they regenerate to some extent (these are the hairlike nerve ending "sweepers" lining the mucosal pathways at the most simplistic level of explanation) and our smoking has inevitably damaged these(and other things) over the years so perhaps they cannot move the gunk out because they are paralysed or dead and cannot regenerate.?
Maybe there is some improvement over time ie. Years.
But then again if the permanent damage is done like in having existing diagnosed COPD or emphesma where both aveoli and cilia are damaged beyond repair there will be no improvement in lung function. I suspect maybe those of us who cannot clear the gunk have some kind of impaired lung function. In my case I would clear heavy mucus from my lungs while I was smoking, but then this suddenly stopped. Even coughing became unproductive. Stopping tobacco smoking I would imagine simply prevents the condition worsening.

I'm interested in knowing how PG affects the mucosal membranes in the upper respiratory tract.

I only smoked for 10 years, age 14 until 24. I smoked heavily during that time though (mostly 1-sometimes 3 packs a day full flavored). When I quit, I did not cough at all, as far as I can remember. Although I did have a "taste" in my chest like cigarette ashes for quite awhile after wards. Due to my age and time having smoked, I doubt I damaged my lungs too much.

Everyone's body and lifestyle are very different, and can probably explain a lot.

After decades of smoking I never had a productive cough. The cough I had was uncontrolable at times but resulted from a tickle in the throat, which I figured resulted from a dry throat. It was terrible. But I never had a productive cough of any kind while I was smoking or after I quit and started vaping.

I can understand the cilia issue but don't know why that would interfere with the tar sluffing off the lungs once we stop smoking. I just don't get why some cough and some don't after quitting smoking.

I don't think the PG or VG has anything to do with it, as most of us use the regular pre-made carts or juices for some time before trying to make our own, thus we all vape the PG and VG in the beginning. But then again, I don't know.
