hey guys. i ordered my first mech mod today along with some efest 18650 button tops .i was reading that it is dangerous to charge these batteries above 4.2 volts or below 3 volts. i went with the nitecore intellicharger i2 for charging. does this charger automatically know how to keep the battery at 4.2 max/3.0 min, or do i need to manually make sure that it is charged to the right voltage. idk how i could possibly know what voltage the battery is at so I'm assuming this charger can do that for me but in the event that i am wrong i just wanted to hear your guys thoughts. i have never owned and barely used a mech mod before. i am extremely excited but i want to make sure that i am vaping in a safe manner. thanks guys!!!

Its the right charger for you. Its up to you to make sure it doesnt get to low but the charger will cut itself off and maintain 4.2v with trickle charge si plug in over night and all is well

ok thank you so much. and how do i make sure it does not go too low in voltage? do i have to just be reasonable and stop using it after a certain amount of time?

The Nitecore intellicharger i2 is supposed to be one of the better ones & has many advanced features.

I ended up getting a Efest V2 digital charger, which also is good but did consider that one.

Beats the ThreatFire charger that I had by leaps & bounds, it was cooking my AW IMR 18490 batteries, the first 30 minutes of the charge, they were getting really hot, so was the charger. Learned on this forum that this is dangerous & is a battery killer.

A charger that is working properly terminates the charge cycle when the battery reaches 4.2 volts.

A charger has nothing to do with keeping a battery at a minimum voltage. That's up to an APV to shut down at a predetermined minimum voltage, or you if you are using a mechanical mod.

Since neither the Nitecore charger or a mech mod has any voltage display you need to purchase a volt meter to understand what is going on with both the charger and the battery while you use it. This is especially important since 1.) You bought a Nitecore and I'm not about to hide my disdain for Nitecore producing crap chargers. The majority of complaints about defective chargers on ECF are about Nitecore. and 2.) You state you have extremely limited experience using a mech mod.

As voltage drops off while the battery is in use you should notice the dropoff in performance on a mech. Should notice... Until you get a feel for that it's important to check the voltage on your battery. And since it's gonna be a Nitecore the only way you you can determine that it's (still) functioning properly is to check the voltage of the batteries coming off the charger.

That was the deciding factor in my purchasing the Efest V2, it does show the voltage in digital readout & the charge rate can be adjusted. I chose the lower rate.

OP: i posted this in your other thread, but it's probably more appropriate here...

I don't use an Nitecore, but i've always heard that they are good chargers...

This is a little off topic, but since you bought a Nitecore and seeing that going mech may eventually lead you to Sony VTC batteries, i'm fairly sure you'll want an answer to this as well.

I was at a venders site looking at Sony VTC4 and noticed the following note: "Note: For safety reasons, we recommend customers do not charge this battery in Nitecore Intellichargers. We highly suggest users only use Xtar brand chargers that are compatilbe for this type of battery as Xtar's can handle the charging load. Please reference your chargers manual to ensure compatability."

Does anyone know why a Nitecore shouldn't be used for VTC4s? This is more out of curiousity than anything else because VTCs are very popular and I happen to use them as well...

Nitecore is one of the most recommended brands here on ECF, so I would assume it's also one that's most ECF members end up getting. Assuming a standard defect rate it would also stand to reason that most of the complaints would be from the most used brand.

I have no clue why a vendor would post that.I charge my 30 amp EH batteries with my nitcore and have no problems also there are people who charge 26650 batteries that are more of a strain than the sony vtc4 and have seen no complaints.

The batteries wont be able to take a full charge if you take them below 3,6 (i think) too many times... But the charger is perfect, i recently bought the i4 and its great... Fast charging and the batteries are perfectly charged every time... Doesnt handle 26650's that well tho, the bays are a little small for those but it will charge them once they get in there

I've had the Nitecore i2 for months now, and I've noticed a problem with mine. The left battery slot often stops charging and shows the battery fully charged shortly after I put in in, when it couldn't possibly be. When I check the charge in that battery, sure enough, it's not charged.

When I pull that battery out and put it in the right slot it charges for the usual time, so apparently there's something wrong with the left charging slot on mine. It doesn't do this every time, but it does it often enough. Something's not right there.

My Nitecore i4 has been fine. All bays work and all my batteries come off the charger at 4.2V +/- 0.02V. It may not charge as fast as other chargers out there (0.375A if all bays are charging, or 0.75A if two bays are charging) but that's why you have more than one battery. Just let the others charge while you vape, then swap them out as needed. The charging status indicator is rather simple, but it does the job.

I got my i4 for $16 off amazon. For that price, I'm happy with it.

I've had that same problem with my nitecore i2. It seems that some units will have this problem. What I did was to find the "sweet" spot on the positive end on the charger, such that the problem does not occur. A cardboard on the slot where the battery sits on solved the problem. But the charger has now been consigned to the store room.
