This is one of my favorite parts of the article, :

2. Potato: This is a vegetable that contains a nicotine alkaloid known as solanine, mostly found in the peel. A potato has an average weight of 15ng/g but goes to about 42.8ng/g if the potato is green or still budding while the ripe ones contain as little as 4.3ng/g net weight. If you get pureed potatoes, then the amount shoots up to about 52ng/g. Such high nicotine content is said to have fatal implications on human health.

And the funniest part is that the author is not writing this as a joke - she's quite serious. I mean, have you ever heard of a single case of fatal nicotine overdose from eating pureed potatoes?

And you won't. ng means nanogram. A nanogram is 1 billionth of a gram, or 1/1000000th of a milligram. So those high-nic potatoes contain 0.000052 mg/g. It's a meaningless dosage. You'd have to eat over 41lbs of potatoes to reach 1 mg of nicotine.

Thanks Zal42 for doing the math for me. I looked up the average weight of a potato and found this.

While potatoes vary greatly in size or shape, potatoes produced commercially are ordered and packed based on average size and weight. The range is from extra large, with the average potato weighing 560 gm (20oz) down to small, with the average potato weighing 185gm (6.5 oz). It could be said therefore that the "average potato" is about 375 gm (13.25 oz).

So even if you ate an extra large potato, 560 * 52 ng = 29,120 nanograms, which converts to 0.02912 milligrams

I once had a fatal dose, but I recovered by the next morning by taking pharma drugs, they're great and taste good too! :p:p:p:facepalm::).

I myself, had several doctors tell me that I needed to stop smoking cigarettes but not one of them said it was because they contain nicotine. They always brought up the facts of risks for cancer and lung problems. I even had a dental hygenist tell me that smoking was destroying my teeth and the bones in my jaws because of the large amount of heat generated when I inhaled on a cigarette. Because of my profession, I have to have a physical every year and I plan on disscussing this with the doctor on my next visit. I can say however, that since I've started vaping and quit smoking, that myself, and even my co-workers have noticed a hugh improvement inmy stamnia and breathing and I plan on telling my doctor that.
