DH & I recently got our first e-cigs (Pocket Mini from PS). We charged the batteries for a full 12 hours as per the instructions. Both of his batteries work fine, but mine blinked about 10 times on the second drag.

He thought maybe my charger wasn't working, so I charged it for another 12 hours, this time with the USB charger, but I'm still having the same problem - the LED blinks about 10 times every time I try to use it.

Did I get a bad battery?

I have a Pilot and have been trying to figure out this stuff too. On mine when it blinks 10 times the battery is dead. If I take one long drag (about 6 secs) and light cuts out during this it won't light again for 2 minutes. The light fading on and off during use I am not so sure. I have a battery that is doing what you have described. Testing makes me feel that this is not normal. It has been mentioned that some of those smart chips running the vaporizing process can be testy. I'm just happy mine came with an extra battery!

Lorddrek, is this only happening with one of your batteries?

DH and I have 4 batteries between us, and only one of them does this strange flashing thing. That's why I'm starting to think that it's a problem with the battery itself rather than a defective charger or bad vaping technique or whatever.

You said yours won't light again for 2 minutes. I'll have to check mine and see if that happens to me too.

harper, he has the pilot, the pocket mini does not have a 2 minute cutoff. i would e-mail steve about the problem, i have not had that problem with any of my batteries. it could be bad. if you contact him now, he will have a record of the problem before the warranty expires, and i am sure he will honor it, even if he can not remedy it until his move is complete.

Thanks, Jimgman. I had no idea that my pocket mini didn't have a cutoff. I'm really new to this, and there's so much to learn.

I did email Daniel the day before yesterday. I'm not surprised that I haven't heard back since he's apparently receiving all of the PureSmoker messages during the move.

I do trust that the warranty will be honoured. I've heard so many good things about PureSmoker that I actually placed my second and third orders before I had even received my first one.

Other batteries work fine with that atomizer?
You charged it for 12 hours, and it still acts as though the battery is dead after you puff eh?

Most self regulating batteries for electronics use a simple op-amp set up as a voltage comparator with the reference voltage determined by a resistor and zener diode to verify battery levels.

It's quite common for the reference line on an op-amp to have the wrong resistance, or to stop bleeding off through the zener diode prematurely (wrong breakdown voltage).

During use, the voltage available for the comparator circuit is decreased, but the reference line should be set at a level such that it takes into account this voltage drop.

These things should ideally be checked by the manufacturer during the build... but as with most production lines, they probably use a 10% check rate, or a moving check rate that's overstayed it's welcome.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be easy for the Vendor to verify the low power indicator is good without smoking it themselves start to finish. So I wouldn't place blame on the vendor.

These things aren't user serviceable to my understanding.

You can do the obvious, and check for metal flecks or oils on the battery contacts... that could cause a short path which would trick the level indicator, but that's not likely.

Beyond the obvious visual checks on the outside, there's nothing you can really do about it.

In short, yeah, replace the battery. But don't be harsh on the vendor.

Sorry to hear that, esmkr and Spikey. I guess I'm not the only one.

I didn't know that a defective battery could kill an atomiser. I guess I'll stop trying to use it. Thanks, Withnail.

Johnsky, I appreciate the technical info. I have to admit that a lot of it is beyond my understanding, but I will do a visual inspection just in case.

I apologise if I came across as "harsh on the vendor." That was certainly not my intention. I'm actually very happy with PS, and I do not in any way blame them for this.

As far as I'm concerned, I just happened to get a defective battery during a time when PS isn't able to do anything about it. There's no one to blame here except possibly Mr. Murphy ;-)
