Hey all. I am fairly new to vaping (about a month) and my brother bought me the Nautilus Aspire tank and the iStick. I've followed all instructions when I bought it tat the store as the owner said something like priming it before actually using the vape button.

Recently though, the vaping tastes horrible. The actual taste feels fine but it leaves a nasty burnt aftertaste that I can't take. As for the juice we are using, it's called REX and it is a kiwi strawberry flavoring. IMO this juice seems pretty decent quality but I could be wrong.

I was wondering... what causes this burnt taste? Is it the coil? If it is, can I clean it/fix it or do I need to replace the parts? And if I do need to replace the parts, can someone provide me a list of things to do to prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advanced. Happy vaping.

How long have you been using the coil? The Aspire is a great tank, in fact it is my favorite and I use it every day. It's weak point is the coils gunk up pretty quickly which can result in a burnt taste. I don't think anyone has figured a way to effectively clean them. You can buy replacement coils pretty much anywhere for about $3 and they are a snap to change. If you otherwise like the Aspire and can afford it, just get a supply and change them out every week or so.

Especially turn down your voltage!

Right now I have a 1.6 ohm coil that's over a month old. I vape a really strongly flavored menthol DIY at 18 mg./ml.(I usually have icicles dangling from my sinuses), so my e-liquid is very easy on coils. I started the coil at 3.3 volts in my Provari, and a couple of days ago, I had to jack it up to 3.5 volts. I know from experience that the coil is not long for this world. From a previous 1.6 ohm coil, I learned that if I go much past 3.7 volts, it'll scorch. And then that's the end of the coil: there's no way to remove the scorched taste once that happens.

I've tried zapping old Aspire Nautilus coils in 91% isopropyl alcohol for a total of an hour in an ultrasonic cleaner. No joy: the isopropyl alcohol doesn't even change color, and the coil is no better after than before. On the other hand, this method works well with Vision Vivi Nova coils -- 12 minutes zapping, then a long soak in fresh isopropyl alcohol, then several days drying, then dry burning before using. I'll get three to four cleanings doing this, then I have to recoil with new wire and wicks.

But Aspire Nautilus coils are cheap: I've found them for $2.50 each when bought in 5-packs. And, as I've found, they last quite a long time before they call it a life.

A burned coil happens when there is not enough juice flowing through the atomizer. Once a coil has burned the taste will remain no matter what you do. Try adjusting your vaping style. Take long slow draws. Not sharp and fast as is done with a cigarette. In time, you will be able to feel the instant a coil is going to burn and stop inhaling to prevent it from happening. Do not try to vape until the coil is near dry as it is sure to burn.

The problem with what is called gunk is totally different. Gunk is caused by build up on the coil. It will happen with any coil that is used long enough. Dark colored and sweet vapes will cause it to happen sooner. The primary symptom is that it becomes more difficult to vape. The atomizer is getting clogged which prevents efficient air flow. These can often be salvaged by soaking the atomizer in everclear or vodka. Some people use effervescent denture cleaner. After soaking, slosh the atomizer around. I use a measuring cup just because it is convenient. Then, place the atomizer in near boiling water. Move it around some more, if possible. Using a kitchen strainer you can give it a final rinse in hot tap water. Place on a cloth or paper towel to cool and dry. It can be used immediately. The first few vapes will be watery. I prefer to blow as much water as possible out of the atomizer.

The easy cleaning method by pbusardo:is on youtube. Put the atomizer(s) in a kitchen strainer. Shake and rinse under hot water. Dry on a paper towel.

BTW, nice brother.
