Stopped smoking normal smokes 4 weeks ago thanks to this wonder you call vaping.

However, I initially went onto 24mg nicotine and reckon it was a bit strong.

I got a really painful ulcer in the soft palet in my mouth at the back, its not sore now and is healing, and I read this was normal.

But in the mornings, I get a really productive cough and what looks like tar comes out - is this the nasty cigarette stuff coming out?

cheers

I have to say I feel more energised and breathe much better especially when spending quality time with the good lady....ahem.... anyway.

Yes you are at the stage (3-6 weeks) where all the years of tar build up are being expelled from your lungs. When I got to that point, during my morning shower I would hang my head below my waste and force a cough or two and get rid of huge nasty gobs. I haven't had "that smoker's phlegm cough" for three years now.

In general, mouth ulcers are not good at all, pipe smokers (I mean real pipes) know this very well and try to avoid them all the time. Fortunately they are rare in vaping.

The causes of your ones might be many: too high temperature given by an excessive voltage respect to the resistance, too frequent puffs in a nervous way, ruined coils, burnt wicks, lack of juice irroration on the wicks, too high nicotine concentration, really bad juice.

And yes, your cough might also depend on the nasty cigarette stuff too. Stay away from them ;)

My fiance was the the same way(minus the ulcer) all that black and brown stuff really wigged him out. Smoked 2 pks a day from day one and the in the last 2 yrs he smoke tampa nuggets... which almost destroyed his health. I'm just a reformed social smoker... so I didn't experience the tar... well actually I did because of the second hand smoke, ew. But hope all that stuff clears up soon.

I have found that if I accidentally get juice in my mouth, then I will get an ulcer from it. The juice irritates my lips and tongue. I've noticed that when I do get an ulcer, a day or two before that, I got juice in my mouth.
It's rare, but it does happen....for me at least.

    Me too exactly

I smoked for 58 years... 2 PAD the last 8 or so. All my mucousy smoker's cough left the first couple of weeks vaping. It was just wonderful to be free of that and the wheezing and breathlessness that had become a way of life for me. Then, at the 6-month mark, I got the worst thick productive cough I've ever had in my life. I went to a popular "quit smoking" forum and found that the majority there who smoked as heavily and long as I did hit this same wall at 6-to-9 months being smoke-free. It took 4 months to clear as it was also allergy season for me but now its all cleared up. But, the experience was so bad that I decided not to inhale anything except air into my lungs. I now shallow (throat) inhale and actually enjoy it more... more flavor I think. A bonus was that while trying to figure out what was going on, I discovered I was allergic to dairy and eliminated it and soy from my diet.... that was like a miracle in itself. I am trying to say here that we are all so different that only the most rudimentary generalities can be addressed. The thing is to just use common sense, pay attention to symptoms and experiment with different possible solutions while not blaming vaping in general for any problems experienced and be aware that vaping, like so many other things, might aggravate another condition already present.... IE: like the doc says, if you are already having a congestion problem, stay away from dairy and my non-doc opinion is don't lung inhale then either.

It's very, very common for ex-smokers to cough up crap. Smoking paralyzes the cilia that clean out the lungs. When you quit all those chemicals, the cilia come back to life and start sweeping out the trash. So it's not at all unusual to cough up gunk for a while...

I did have a cold sore, canker sore or moth ulcer, a few months ago, didn't really connect it to vaping at the time. Was doing like 24 or 36mg nic and a high pg level at the time, dropped down to 18mg nic on my last order, and have dropped down to about 13mg nic on my DIY juice, and mixing at 80% VG. Haven't had one since I've gone down on my nic and PG, so really can't say which if either was the cause. Most likely the nic, since it is caustic, and an oxidizer. Main reason I dropped down in nic is that I've stepped up to a good rba, and the nic is delivered more efficiently with my better builds and 24 & 18mg nic was kicking my but. And I was a pack & 1/2 camel filter smoker.

Yup. Over 6 years of not smoking and still cough up the occasional nasty stuff, but that's likely because of the permanent damaged caused by smoking. That's the thing, you'll never be 100% if you've been smoking for a long time.

But yea, you're definitely going to feel way better after the coughing episodes stop. I didn't have the luxury of vaping when I quit analogs. I had a very miserable 6 months after quitting cold turkey.
