I just picked up a couple mosfets (IRF510) from radioshack, and I'm unsure about how to wire it in. Never used them before... As I understand it, they need a resistor between the drain and the gate, but I don't know what value resistor to put in. I got some 47kohm, will that work?

the IRF510 from radioshack has a high gate voltage requirement, at least higher than the IRL3103 I used for my touch switch. In my sig theres a link to a video on how I made a basic touch switch, that'll get you started on the concept, you can build it much smaller than I did, But I made the video just to show the basics.
