Unlike the failed Iowa state ban, which would have limited certain flavored tobacco stores to only tobacco shops with 18+ admittance policies, this looks to be an outright ban.

Linn County considers new restrictions on sale and distribution of smokeless tobacco :: The Republic

The proposed ordinance was approved (after a public hearing) by the Linn County Board of Health on March 23. Linn County The PDF to the ordinance itself appears to be broken.

The news article stated that the Board of Supervisors would vote on the proposed ordinance in May, but the ordinance isn't listed on the agenda for today's meeting (May 4), and the agenda for the Board's May 11 meeting isn't posted yet.Linn County

Remember people -- if a local or state government is able to ban a smoke-free tobacco product that has never been shown to cause 2% the disease and death that cigarettes cause, there is nothing to keep them from targeting e-cigarettes.

Suggestion for whoever might go in person to testify: Purchase a package of Ariva. They are ovoid-shaped brownish pellets. They look like some type of herbal tablet.

Also purchase a package of the new Nicorette mini-lozenges that lookl almost exactly like white Tic-Tacs. Take them both to the meeting and pass them around for inspection. Make sure that the pop top on the Nicorette lozenges is easy to pop open with one hand.

Great suggestion, Elaine. The proponents of the bill will probably bring an example of the Camel Orbs, Sticks, or Strips--make sure to challenge everyone to open it and hilarity WILL ensue--those things are TRICKY! What candy is tobacco flavored and kept in childproof containers?

Be sure to point out that most nicotine poisonings occur from pharmaceutical products or cigarette butts that aren't meant to be swallowed, not kept in childproof packages, and are not included in this ban.

Very impressed with the folks from in and around Linn County that I've managed to make contact with. Even though none are dissolvable users (nor am I) they recognize the danger posed by this bill and are willing to work to stop it.

But keep writing to them, folks, if you haven't yet.

Cause...the other side will. If somebody changes their vote...then it's a majority on the other side.

Let them KNOW that the products they are talking about are safer alternatives to cigs that people NEED.

Best,
Ande

PS- I haven't lived in Iowa for years, but my folks are in Linn County. I use snus to survive visits with them! ;-) So obviously, I had to write...

I just wanna say that I also wrote - though, I mentioned in the first couple of lines that I live out of state, in case they are swamped and don't care. BUT. I do so because when Washington things come up, people from the ECF - mainly from casaa - come from out of state to help. And the letters come in.

I received an e-mail from Rep. Ben Rogers who represents my district in Linn County(Iowa). He thanked me for my e-mail and appreciated my thoughts and opinions. He went on to say although he is anti-tobacco (he had an Uncle and grandfather who died of tobacco-related illnesses) he does not feel the government should be involved in "protecting people from themselves" and banning legal products for adults. He stated that there are plenty of laws, fines and regulations already on the books to prohibit sales to minors and that the focus should be on parents and schools educating youth on the dangers of tobacco use.
He stated that he does not feel it will even come to a vote this session - but if, and whenever it does he will definitely vote no.

Wait, who is no longer involved?

Sorry, wrong information. I got the two confused- Iowa and Washington. I sent to both around the same time, but when I went back to check on the name, it was not Iowa but Washington. It was Jake Fey that resigned and replaced by Councilmember Woodards. He forwarded my email to her.

According to the Linn County Medical Society's Facebook page:

The LC Board of Supervisors will consider three ordinances on August 22, 9:00 am at the Westdale Mall office. Public comments welcome. Subject: prohibiting sale or other distribution of dissolvable tobacco products in Linn County.

These products appear to be marketed to children through flavorings and packaging. The LC Medical Society supports the Board of Supervisors efforts.

Please send e-mails to the Board of Supervisors -- CASAA.org
