I'm switching to MTL because it's more resembling to smoking. I know it may depend on many factors, but overally, is MTL less juice-consuming than DTL?

(What about when you hold the fire button without inhaling/sucking? Does it virtually consume no juice? And is it harmful for the coil, since it might get overly hot if it's in wattage mode?)

MTL is very juice efficient when compared to DTL. One major contributing factor is MTL tanks/atomizers operate generally in the 1.0 to 1.2ohm resistance or higher rating with thinner wire, generally 28awg or thinner, which has less metal mass and more resistance per foot than thicker wire, this accounts to MTL devices needing less wattage, generally in the 8 to 18watts range, and 18 to 20 watts at the high end for most MTL would be needing a very loose air flow, almost a restrictive DTL airflow (think the Kanger Sub-Tank/Top-Tank line). Less watts = less juice consumed, the flip side to that, to keep your nic cravings under control if using nic, as example stepping down from DTL, if you are using 3mg nic/ml at hypothetically 45watts or so, even running in the average ball park for MTL at 10 to 12 watts median average, 45watts/10watts=4.5, 3mg X 4.5 = 13.5mg/ml or close to that nic level in your liquid would be needed, most liquids off the shelf you can find a 12mg/ml. I float between MTL and DTL, though most my day is on MTL devices, I have to use 2 different techniques, DTL is straight DTL rapidly of about 6 to 8 seconds, then breathe out my nose in a single firing hit, MTL I've adjusted to a double hit, draw one hit into my mouth slowly at about 5 seconds, inhale letting off the fire button, then breathe out through my nose while firing a second hit slowly of about 5 seconds again and breathe out though my nose again. Most mods will cut out firing, firing time out, at around 10 to 15 seconds depending on the firmware, generally 10seconds, it is just how I adjusted to the mod firmware time out limits of most mods.

Firing without drawing, not advisable, if just a couple seconds, you'll not see any adverse affects, first hit when you do draw immediately after such a firing will be a bit warmer than normal, but if you fire and hold, if the mod doesn't time out, you'll scorch your wicking as said above.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and throw out numbers. This is for myself of course and everybody is different .

When I vaped MTL years ago I was using free base 36 mg e liquid normally. 48 mg when I would be in situations where I couldn't vape often. With my DTL I am using 3 mg. So basically 1/10 nicotine. A 30 mL bottle would last me weeks. Very high ohm, 3.0 to 1.5 I think. Honestly back then not many of us knew to much about ohms, If it fit the threads of my dse 901 it was fair game. We were more excited about the cool passthroughs that could do a whopping 5 volts.

But I digress, For me MTL used one tenth the juice I believe.

I have a Vaporesso Target Pro. I'm doing MTL with highly restricting airflow, and it feels fine. Does it make a big difference if I get a MTL tank? Actually didn't know there are such tanks.

MTL Tanks have a really really tight draw. Likely tighter than what you are using now. So only get a MTL tank if that is what you want. I prefer a looser pull than most MTL tanks allow. So like you, I use a DTL tank and restrict the airflow and use a smaller bore drip tip. My wife has the Innokin Ares MTL tank (rebuildable) and loves it. The draw is too tight for me though.

I see. It's a little annoying with DTL tank because the right airflow for me is when the air hole is about 5% open, and it's hard to set it precisely without trying several times.

There's quite a lot of tanks, it's maybe 30% of tanks out there, and there's been a return to MTL after the DL burst faded.

And same as per the DL tanks, you get cartridges or RTAs....

For example:
FastTech - Gadgets and Electronics

Here's a thread about MTL tanks that should give you a few ideas:
Best MTL Tank?

One tank that I never did get, but reviews are pretty good for it, and it's "convertable" as it has a pin that's in the airflow that can be removed to give more airflow, but with it, it would tighten it. Regrettably, it only comes with a larger mouthpiece, but as I haven't tried it I can't say, but getting a smaller bore tip would be an option.

48mg... Where do you get this nicotine from?
This was back in 2009-2010 ish. It was Chinese liquid for the most part of I remember right. A few people were vaping 60! But our wattage was real low. One of my mods which I still have actually used AA sized batteries.

Yes, is the short answer (provided you use higher nicotine) you will consume less eliquid. You have to work pretty hard to consume anywhere near the amount of liquid used in DL vaping.

I have found (personally) that while I can make some DL setup tanks work for me, it usually involves a lot of modifications-- different driptip, trying to close down airflow, lower wattage etc., but I do find dedicated MTL tanks to work better if they are setup as MTL (airflow, driptip etc.)

The difference in juice consumption between DL and MTL can be pretty drastic provided you are using high nicotine in the the MTL device. At 24mg in a MTL pod system I vape maybe 1ml in a 6-7 hour Period. In contrast I can drain 3ml of 3mg in a DL tank in about 2-4 hours. If the DL device is used all day, ill go through 6 - 12 ml a day vs maybe 3ml max on the MTL device.

I've heard it but never noticed a difference going from MTL to DTL with the same nicotine level and TC rather than sub-Ω for the DTL. I was always ~3ml/18mg from eGo-Cs MTL to 18650 sticks/Gennies/protanks MTL to TC subtanks MTL/DTL.

I notice everyone is throwing in different nicotine levels. That right there will change my liquid usage, not much until I get to 0mg but then it's a lot.
The assumption is also it's high Ω low W on the MTL and sub-Ω high W on DTL. You can't change everything and blame one thing.

Is MTL less liquid (not juice) consuming than DTL? Not by itself, but the style you go to in order to do DTL and the mg you change to may be if you desire to inhale bigger clouds with the same frequency.
If it's nicotine urges that dictate you'll probably inhale an equal amount of nicotine MTL or DTL.

My puff count and liquid usage has always been roughly the same until I get to 0mg. My puff time on the sticks was about 5.5 seconds. My puff time on an open DTL tank is 3 seconds.

For me at least, yeah, it's definitely true that MTL consumes less juice than DTL. I started out doing MTL, because that's what the options were at the time mostly, and now I do DTL, because that's how things naturally progressed.

It also makes perfect sense, because MTL devices are going to be lower powered, you'll be vaping at less watts, the airflow and draw is going to be less and the MTL coils are not going to be mega juice guzzlers like many of the multi-core, higher watt DTL coils.

The good part for me at least, is that it doesn't matter one bit to me, in terms of price at least.

When I was doing MTL, I'd be paying something ridiculous like almost $30 for 30 ml, if I wanted a good commercial juice.

Now for $30, I can get 300 ml of good commercial juice, so ten times the amount, for the same price.

That is the trade off using a DTL tank for MTL. IMHO the results are worth it. They may or may not be for you.

48mg... Where do you get this nicotine from?

I haven't seen commercial liquid at those levels in a long time. These days if you want that high you probably either have to DIY or use a JUUL pod system which uses 50mg. DYI is pretty easy and you can make your own liquid for less than a penny per ml. I DIY my liquid and make my own coils and I think I figured I was spending around 3 cents per day averaged out on juice and coils.

You wouldn't notice any real difference using TC for MTL vs DTL, especially if using the same coil(s). Vapor production and subsequently juice consumption is a function of temperature and surface area over time. If you use a certain sized coil and set it at a specific temp, changing only your puff style isn't really going to affect juice consumption other than DTL may be a slightly longer pull.

MTL is most traditionally done on a single coil > 1 ohm coil at lower wattage, while DTL is more traditionally done using more than one coil, < 1 ohm at higher wattages. By using more coils you are increasing the surface area, using higher wattages you are increasing temperature, AND increasing draw time. All of which contributes to using more juice per pull in the more traditional sense. I vape on a single coil around 0.5 ohm in TC at 435F using an MTL draw. So in essence combining some elements of both traditional styles. Doing this yields more vapor than traditional MTL and less than traditional DTL. IMHO it's a good balance between the two. I call it Chimera style.

Since I DIY my juice on the cheap, juice consumption and costs are practically irrelevant.[/QUOTE]

Agree, except that I take longer pulls with MTL. Slow and steady was how I learned to get vapor from eGo-Cs. DTL being open is quicker to get my fill and no need to go slow.

I don't notice duals in TC using much more liquid. Although I haven't really tried measuring it. It really should.

Yeah taking hard fast pulls will shorten the time then.

Again it's all about surface area so a single 3mm coil vs dual 3mm coils is double the surface area and should use more juice, but the lines blur if comparing something like a single 4mm coil to dual 2mm coils. Nothing drinks juice faster from what I have seen than some of those factory made quad, hex, and octa coil heads though.
