How to avoid throat hit?

I'm very new to vaping. Earlier this week I got a blu cigarette and loved the taste and cool feel of the vapor. More recently, I procured a Lavatube and have been experimenting with compatible atomizers and cartomizers (3ohm resistance single coil).

So far I've tried over 10 different flavors from a variety of vendors that use combination of PG/VG mixtures and nearly all of them produce a long lasting burning sensation in the back of my throat (especially with atomizers) that was not present with the blu cig. Am I doing something wrong when dripping and filling the cartos?

I was also thinking it could be the nicotine levels of the liquid samples (between 12-18mL), but was unable to find specifications on the liquid used in the blu cigarettes to compare to (other than the supplier name - Johnson Creek).

Any insight into how to reduce this burning sensation (I believe referred to as throat hit) would be a great help. Thanks.

After reviewing Johnson Creek's web store, I noticed they offer PG-free (or VG based) juice, which should reduce throat hit. The blu cartridges I ordered were Coffee flavored, but Johnson Creek only offers their "Espresso" juice as PG-based.

I assume the coffee cartridges I received had the PG-based Espresso juice pre-loaded. Does this mean it's simply the nicotine content producing the burning?

Nic level will effect TH. Same with power level used and also the PG/VG make up of the juice. Carto and Atty also affects TH.

You might want to ask Blu what level of Nic they use. Id say the next step down for you would be 6 MG. Also up the VG will calm down the burning. More VG and less PG. PG has a tendency to burn throat.

Less voltage to the atty or carto if you are using VV device like the LT.

Hope this helps./

I almost always use 70% VG or more for my juices..

Throat hit is a function of the nicotine content. I vape 18-24mg, 70-80%VG and dont have much of it.

VG mutes the throat hit, so higher VG will help.
I think it might not be the juice though. You could be vaping at a higher voltage than you could be but, more likely, it could be your technique. Try taking slower drags, holding it in your mouth longer and slowly inhaling mostly through your nose to draw it into your lungs slowly. Don't inhale as deeply. Most of the nic is absorbed in your mouth anyway.

If you drip, you also have to be sure not to let the atty get too dry. That'll cause a burning sensation, as will a too-dry carto. You need to keep both of them wet.

I'm not sure if you're describing throat hit or a sensation caused by an atty or carto that is too hot, either from too high a voltage or from getting too dry.

With the lavatube, if you keep the volts around 3.7, you should be close to the wattage of your blu. It might just take some time to get used to a warmer vape.

Sailorman, thanks for the great advice. I was vaping at 4.0 so I'll try lowing the voltage a bit.

I just tried the slower drags and nose inhalation technique and it seems to have reduced the throat hit by a bit.

So higher VG and lower nic content coupled with a lower voltage and lighter hits might be just what I'm looking for. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I go back to Vapebash. Thanks again for your help!

This may not be part of the problem, but some vendors use a pepper component (capsacin?) to simulate throat hit, which could be contributing to the problem for you. If you're going to one of the Chicago meets, first I'm jealous, but you can ask them directly and sample too! The one tough part is that once I get that burning feeling from a juice, it takes a day for my throat to settle down enough to fairly evaluate others. God luck and enjoy the meet!

also, I take shorter drags with the hotter voltages and juices - it seems to minimize this.

Awesome advice, I'll start paying closer attention to non-standard ingredients. I learned a lot about vaping from the nice people at the meet up, but was a little too embarrassed to mention the throat hit thing. I think I even coughed a few times right in front of some vendors when trying their juices.

Sailorman: Thanks for the vendors, their selections look great. I'll definitely be try some of their stuff.

PG = enhances throat hit
Nicotine = enhances throat hit
Menthol additions = throat hit

You might want to look at 0mg either PG or VG. Also you could get some higher resistance atomizers/cartomizers. THe higher resistance, the less hot they will get, less throat hit you will get
