Hello everyone, first post, but this forum was helpful to read when I fist started with an ego years ago. So, not new to vaping, but I did just buy an evod starter kit at a local vape shop and...Everything was going swimmingly, I imagine it had a 2.5 ohm silica coil unit in the tank.

I bought the new Kanger organic cotton coils, it's a single coil labeled MT32 SOCC, 1.8 ohms. It burns hotter, and uses more juice, which is fine, but after 2 or 3 days, the cotton is just gone. I opened it up, and there's two tiny little pieces of singed cotton on the sides, but nothing inside the coil. These do not come with flavor wicks.

I opened a new one, and saw the coil almost looks bunched up, so it's like just a tiny portion of the cotton goes through the coil, and such a small piece of the cotton can burn and disintegrate so easily. All the others I have used have also burned up the cotton in 3 days.

I am letting it get soaked before I vape, so should i go to 2.2 or 2.5 ohms instead? Will it burn less hot that way? I don't know if the issue is heat, or if the coil is too tight. I would like to just buy some cotton balls, but opening up two of the coils somehow rendered them duds.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I really miss those coils! They were the easiest to rewick. What I always did was take the post off and drop a couple drops straight onto the coil so it soaks through that cotton. They really shouldn't stop working just by taking the post off. Perhaps you jiggled the bottom pin out or something. Luckily those are not just super easy to rewick, but you can repair the coil if something slips out, they're also super easy to rebuild.
Unfortunately without taking it apart myself I don't think I'd be much help figuring out how you broke a couple. But if you do master taking it off without breaking it, invest in some Cotton Bacon V2. This stuff rules and is easy to work with.

Sounds like you have your wattage turned up way to high.

Back the wattage down to 30-50 watts and no higher.

What is the VG PG ratio of your juice

The cotton is not supposed to 'burn'.
If you use it at the correct power and keep it juiced up, it's a good coil. It's better than silica for taste (debatable) and leaking (for sure).
I have no doubt it is re-wickable as essentially the SOCC (for evod and protank 1 and 2) is just how we used to 'rebuild' them.

What are you vaping it 'on'? They are suitable for eGo batteries and small mods but not so far into double figures watts. Silica was troublesome over 9 watts, these are probably running into trouble at 12w, at a guess. I bought 50 of these coils and never pushed them past 11w, which is where (at the time) my mod would peak anyway.

The OP said in his initial post that he's using an Evod starter kit, so he doesn't have adjustable anything...as far as vw/vv. He said, "Everything was going swimmingly", but then he bought coils with lower ohms.

My opinion is that if he didn't get the "burning" with the original coils that came with it...he should go back to using only that same type & ohms of coils. Like the old saying - If it ain't broken...don't fix it! Stick with what worked. :)

Good point. I thought I'd read that and then got caught up in the comments about watts.

My fault.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I had thought the burnt wicks were odd, since some people say they go weeks without rewicking.

Am I thinking about ohms correctly? 1.8 ohms burns hotter than 2.5? The preinstalled coils on the starter kit weren't marked at 2.5, I just made that assumption.:D

Yes. If you use an online calculator it will show the watts depending on the charge of the battery.

Online Conversion - Ohm's Law Calculator

1.8 will be hotter (more powerful) than 2.2 or 2.5.

What I'm concerned about though is they should be coping with even a 4.2v fresh battery.

In regard to the comment about re-wicking... these are old tech; people consistently got 3-7 days from these types of coils (the silica ones). I made the switch to the cotton and whilst it's another area they beat Silica, nobody is seriously thinking you can exceed 10 days or so, surely?
Don't get me wrong. I think they are good, but compared to an Eleaf GS coil or Nautilus BVC they are way off the pace.
I'll also admit to not re-wicking anything like this. The coils are tiny and very poor quality. I rebuilt Kanger coils for over a year (gosh, are we thinking 2014) with decent wire and organic cotton.
I have some SOCC upstairs. They are shockingly bad wraps. Whoever at Kanger does these (they're not made by machine, they can't be... ) is not very good.
This sounds like a boast, but 6 or 7 wraps squashed into a microcoil will genuinely last longer and be perfect for dry-burning and, yes... re-wicking.
If you were in England, I could even send your the Kuro coiler in the correct size. :)
