Flat top and button top: The only difference is the positive terminal cap. It's wide and low on flat tops, narrow and high on button tops. The height difference between the two is about a mm or so.

The more sophisticated APVs use electronics to provide battery reversal protection. They usually use both flat and button top batteries. Others provide reverse battery protection by using a B+ contact in the battery tube that will only make contact with the positive terminal of a button top battery. These devices cannot be used with flat top batteries.

Both button and flat top batteries may be stacked for use in series.

My APV uses either button or flat top.

As some have said, flat top are required for some mods. That said, from what I am told, aw only makes button tops... Be wary of fake aw batteries.
It's usually the other way around. I've seen devices that can only use button tops and not flat tops. Do you have an example of a vaping device that will only use flat top batteries? I don't.

Generally speaking almost all VV/VW mods will take both. They usually have spring loaded contacts and may have a half inch or more of tolerance.

Mechanical mods are a bit more picky. You have to research your mod a bit to find what works. Many have adjustable contact pins that will let you use both but there are a few that require a specific type. Check to see which it is before buying.

And you might not think a single millimeter of difference matters, but let me show you something....

If that was a flat top battery inside there wouldn't be enough button throw to fire the mod. The button would contact the tube before the pin made contact with the battery.

BTW, that's a Nemesis with 18650 button top battery and a Kick2, just in case you're wondering.
