Dry throat

Hi everyone,
I am another newbie and a near ex smoker now that I'm vaping!
I have been having a lovely time reading the forums and buying different flavours and strengths of ejuice to find the Holy grail of flavours and of course to see what strength suits me.
It seems 18mg is the one for me however I'm wondering if other people sometimes get like a catch in the back of their throat when vaping. Its like a dry feeling, and having a drink doesn't get rid of it.
It always happens despite trying different mg's, flavours and PG/VG mixes.
I'm inhaling as i vape and really enjoy the throat kick so what can i do to stop it? Or....what am I doing wrong.

I'm using both an inferno and an Ego CE4. Any comments would be great as i have a lot to learn :)

The catch in your throat may be from inhaling as you vape. Most vapers draw the vapor into their mouth, like a cigar or pipe, then inhale. That allows it to cool for a moment and reduces the harshness.

As most of the nicotine is absorbed by the tissues in your mouth, inhaling isn't even necessary to keep away the cravings. When I have a sore throat, I just puff without inhaling and it works too. Good luck and welcome to ECF!

To get really technical, PG & VG both draw water from your body to the surface (i.e. mouth, tongue etc) as you inhale and push it out when you exhale (water vapor), so as you vape, you're technically losing water, thus you need to stay hydrated. I drink mostly water, but the occasional powerade or gatorade is just as beneficial since it hydrates and replaces electrolytes.

I too got a dry throat and tongue when I first started vaping, but drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day helped curb that and it only happens every now and then; mainly when I don't have a drink with me.

I only recently stopped, or at least cut down, on the direct inhale technique, as I've discovered I'm developing a PG sensitivity of sorts. It's possible in my (and potentially others) case that it's related to seasonal allergies, as the symptoms I'm having are a dry, scratchy throat, and that 'twitch' coughing sort of feeling, like a tickle in the back of my throat. Large amounts of fluids seem to help it a bit, but I've had to go back to high-VG (50/50+) to get over it. Even with the cigar inhale and out the nose, never really getting it in my throat, I'm noticing the same dryness, so it's quite possible it's just a sore throat or allergies, nothing to do with vaping.

If it persists, there are some OTC throat sprays that are supposed to help with both sore throats and dry-mouth/dry-throat conditions, I actually got a small bottle of something (don't remember the name as I've used it all up by now) from my grandmother since she couldn't use it, and found it really helped me out in a pinch, not to mention it had the side-effect of curing vaper's tongue. I'll ask her if she remembers what the stuff was next time I talk to her, I want to say Bio-something, but I could be confusing it with the toothpaste she uses..

Biotene. I picked a spray bottle the other day from the pharmacy. Great for after I chain vape during my breaks at work. I wouldn't recommend using it before though cuz it kinda ruins every flavor I'm vaping with.

Thanks for that, I believe that they also make the toothpaste then, cause I know for a fact that's the name on the toothpaste tube. The spray stuff is marketed as what, a cure for 'Dry Mouth' or sore throats if memory serves? And I agree 100% with you that it's a bad idea to use before vaping, it's incredibly strong, whatever is in there as far as flavorings, is one reason I suggested (and have used) it to cure vaper's tongue.

I know they make a mouthwash, spray, and a gel for persistent dry mouth. Marketed more towards the older crowd or people that take medication that can cause dry mouth. Didn't realize they had a toothpaste as well; probably the same prop blend of enzymes and moisturizers in the other three. It's not for a sore throat though: you're probably taking about cepacol there. Has benzocaine to temporarily numb the sensitive area. Not sure how that would work on vapers tongue or dry mouth/throat though.

Thankyou to you all, all your answers make so much sense!
I have tried the inhaling technique....it really helps. I also had no idea about the dehydration factor...maybe that's why I keep getting headaches!
Being a coffee drinker I really havent been drinking as much water as I obviously need to. I also think the higher VG the better for me.
I shall be a much happier vaperite now I'm sure, so thanks heaps for the expert advice **:))**

Oh and the dry mouth thing....I actually bought a spray called Aquae thinking it would help for the vaping but it seems to make my mouth feel tacky and even drier!! Not good!
Ill be off to the chemist to get the biotene and use it AFTER a vape session.
I thought the dry mouth thing was a withdrawl symptom from analogues....hadn't considered dehydration.

Personally, I dont think it has anything to do with "inhaling technique".... its just that vapor tends to dehydrate. which is counter intuitive since it contains water. As most have said though, keeping a drink near by will become as much a habit for you as vaping. For instance, I keep a bourbon next to me.

No really though. Just keep something to drink near by and you'll be fine.

Common misconception. The vapor itself, on exhale, contains water, but what you're actually breathing in is straight PG/VG, which as I believe someone stated above, actually draws water out of wherever it can, either the air, or in this case, us..and that's why there's water vapor when you exhale. While that may well be what you were trying to say, I just wanted to chime in and clarify the point for the new folks :)

FWIW I'll drink beer while vaping, and while I know I should be getting even more dehydrated, I either don't notice it, or there's enough water in the beer that it offsets it.
