I see that most conversions state that 20 drops equals one ML. However, I have measured several times. Everytime I am getting 40 drops of Capella flavoring and 37 drops of my Nic Liquid equaling one ml. I know how to use syringes and do conversions as I am a Paramedic. Just wondering if you all have ever measured it out and what are you getting for drop per ML? I now know why I was not getting much flavoring on my first couple of batches.

IMHO, using such a nebulous measure as "drops" of liquid is most definitely NOT the way to do it well.

Drop size/volume can depend on many factors whereas a syringe graduated in milliliters will always give accurate milliliters.

:vapor:

That was exactly what I was thinking. I was just wondering because so many calculators are saying 20 drops = one ML.

There's a video on youtube of a guy making a diy recipe; he says he's going to make an 8ml batch and it is all measured out in drops by the program he's using. He makes it in a 10ml bottle and when he's done it is not even half full. Best to use something that measures ml accurately like a syringe or tall skinny graduated cylinder.

I measure rather than use drops except when I'm mixing really small amounts (a 5ml bottle of some experimental mix maybe). I've found 1ml can vary from about 18 drops of VG from a large plastic dropper bottle, to 40+ on certain flavourings in certain bottles. Average though seems to be around 30 drops per ml for a lot of PG based stuff.

Also, don't measure by bottle size. In a lot of cases a 5ml bottle will hold 7ml if brimmed, or a 10ml will hold 12ml etc. The size quoted normally allows for some head space.

Depends on the dropper a lot.
I've measured it out for a couple of bottles and flavors. I use drops when working with Inawera, which are about 20 drops to 1 ml.
The healthcabin bottles, and most of the bottles alike, give much smaller drops. But those and other flavors are not as concentrated, and so it is much easier to use a syringe. I am bound to lose count with anything over 10 drops anyway.

i can agree, when i did my first couple of diy batches, i was using the 20 = 1ML, which worked out to 1 drop per ML of batch was 5% and i could taste nothing sometimes until 40% which sounded outrageous. so i sucked the whole test batch back up into a syringe and found i had added less than 10% flavouring... i now have a variety of syringes in my DIY kit, but i find for flavoring i like my 1 & 3 ML syringes best depending on the size of the batch i am making

Just skip going by drops and pick up some of these . It reads .1 incriments and they are cheap enough to use 1 for each flavor . I have 100 of them each one labeled for each flavor . I dont use needles on them either and they fit right into any flavoring bottle . If you did want needles for them HC has blunt tip ones for 10 cents each . I also bought 100 of those although iv only used like 5 so far .

Here is how I do it when I use droppers to make small batches or tweak a mix.

I have 3 4oz dropper bottles. One each for my mixed down 36mg 50/50 base, PG, and VG. I measured drops to 5ml, and labeled each bottle for drop count per ml. I also measured a separate dropper this way for flavors.

Then I just adjust the drop per ml and recalculate using the e-juice me up calculator as I go.

For larger batches, I use graduated cylinders and pipettes. I generally make 30ml-90ml at a time of known good juices, and it's quick and easy using the appropriate graduated cylinder.

wow 90ml at a time takes guts . I havent made anything bigger than 15ml at a time yet

Nothing wrong with using Drops in a Recipe.

In fact, some people find it Much Easier Especially for adding Flavoring.

The Key is to understand that Drop Size is a Function of the Dropper Opening and the Viscosity of the Liquid being dispensed. Drops Vary in Size depending on what you Use to Drop with and What is being Dropped

But If a person uses the same Dropper Size to Dispense a given Liquid every time, their recipes become Repeatable.

Where the Problem arises is if you Mix and Match Droppers.

Since I vape at the same Nicotine Level with the Same PG|VG Ratio, I like to make a “Pre-Mix” Nicotine Base for DIY.

My target Nicotine Level is 18mg. And I know from Experience that my Total Flavor/Sweetener amount will be right about 20%. So when I get 125ml of 48mg or 60mg Nicotine Base, I make a Un-Flavored Pre-Mix at 22mg. 22mg leaves room for 20% Flavoring/Sweetener. For this I use a Graduated Cylinder. I then store the Pre-Mix in a 500ml Glass Bottle.

When it comes time to make a Flavored DIY, I just pull out the 22mg Pre-Mix and add Drops of Flavoring and Drops of Sweeter according to my Recipe Card. The Flavoring Drops are always the same because the Always come out of the same OEM Dropper Bottles. Same with the Sweetener. It Always comes out of the Same Dropper Bottle.

Are the Flavor Drops the Same Size per ml as the Sweetener? Are there 20 Drops Per ml? Don’t Know and Don’t Really Care.

If the Recipe calls for 15 Drops of FlavorArt Watermelon and 7 Drops of Sucralose in 10ml of Pre-Mix, it doesn’t matter if the Drops are Different Sizes or not 20 Drops to 1ml. It tastes Good and it tastes the Same Every Time.

I know some people can’t go with this Concept. They have to do Everything in the Same Units of Measure, ie Milliliters. The thought that a Drop can Vary in Size Bugs them.

I just don’t like Washing Handfuls of Syringes, Eye Droppers and Graduated Cylinders and Measuring Everything down to the .1 ml level Every Time I make a DIY.

Trouble with using only drop count without knowing the drop count per ml is when one wants to share a recipe.

Or if one wants to scale up to a large quantity.

Otherwise, the ratio will be the same and that works fine.

Sharing a Recipe with drops isn't Practical. Guess I don’t share enough Recipes to make it a problem for me.

But why is Scaling Up to a Larger Quantity an Issue?

Just seems like a lot of drops to count to make much more than 10ml at a time. But sure, otherwise the ratio will stay the same, and I do see where the way you're doing it is quick and easy.

And you're right, sharing recipe's giving drop count isn't practical unless the called for amount is very small such as with TA. Drives me nuts when folks post a recipe in the recipe thread and don't list ingredients expressed as a percentage of the total.

My nic base dropper= 32 drops per ml. PG dropper=38 drops per ml VG dropper=22 drops per ml. Flavoring dropper=40 drops per ml. So if someone post "use 10 drops per 10ml" that is pretty useless information.

Like most things in Life, there are Good and Bad points to everything. Using Drops is No Difference.

To me, counting out Drops of Favoring and Sweeteners is Far Outweighed by the Hassle of Measuring and Washing Everything after using it once.

Also, most of my Recipes call for more than one Flavoring. I'll add a Drop of Pineapple and 2 Drops of Cherry to my DIY Watermelon Mix. Kinda hard to measure 1/38th of a ml of Pineapple and 1/19th of a ml of Cherry. LOL.

Pre-Mix and Drops works Great for me.

But if a person wants to Measure Every Thing, that's Cool Too.
