Patina on brass is oxidized brass. When iron oxides it is called rust. The color of patina on brass will vary because brass is an alloy of copper, zinc and often some other metals. Generally, patina on brass will eliminate the golden shiny appearance. As patina progresses the brass will become brownish but not as brown as bronze patina. Given enough time and exposure to the elements a brass patina will look greenish as copper oxides begin to appear. It will never turn black on its own.
