If you have a heavy VG juice, you'll almost always have to remove at least one, if not both of the wicks for it to wick properly. VG is just so thick it either takes time to wick or won't fully wick, which leads to burning. So many say not to remove the wicks, though in every single head I've used, both come out. This applies to 50/50 and */50 mixes (where * = 60-90% PG). I've also moved to cotton, as SpyderClouds has. Cotton wicks better and faster that silica in my experience and I now pull out the silica and twist in cotton as a replacement.

I've used protanks for awhile now and have never had the need to remove either flavor wicks or the plastic cup. All my juice is 80% pg, 20% vg. Stock Kanger made heads are all I use, except for ones I've rewound. But replacements are so cheap lately I've just been using new out of the box heads.

When I started vaping I used 100% vg juice. That was fine in the little cartridges for a 510 that came in my original kit. When I moved to cartomizers I started having wicking issues. Once I moved to my current juice blend I never had wicking issues again provided the delivery device worked properly. For me the protank heads have always worked properly except for the very, very few defective ones I've received. FWIW

If you are referring to the piece on the pipe over the flavor wicks - This is a SEAL cup.
Properly installed, it does NOT press on the wicks and DOES seal the coil assembly to the upper Pipe to keep the tank AIR TIGHT

Many Flip or remove this CLAIMING doing so stops wick pinching - NOT!

Flipping or removing exposes the Tank to equalization. With thicker e-liquids this may be a minor issue, with thin liquids it can lead to massive flooding.

ProTank and all Bottom Coil Clearomizers are designed to work under negative pressure.

Balance it maintained by air being drawn UP into the tank through the 510 connection as E-liquid volume is reduced maintaining a slight Negative pressure.
