I have a device that takes a 14500 battery, but rattles inside as it is too thin. I have been looking around and it seems like an 18500 battery is the same as a 14500, but the 18500 is the same length, just a little thicker. A thicker battery would stop the "rattle" I am getting from the 14500 battery.

Are the 14500 and 18500 the same battery length...just the 18500 being a little thicker???

Thanks all!

They are the same length, but the diameter is quite a bit different...

I was going to say you are banned for life, but don't think the admins of the site would think it funny since they are the ones who have that authority to make those decisions.

If the flashlight calls for a 14500, that is all I would put into it. Not using the recommended batteries in any device is just asking for trouble. I would research the flashlight and see if you can substitute other batteries for it but I am inclined to say it doesn't if your directions for the flashlight doesn't say you can.

I am too embarrassed to say....but, it is a new flashlight I got. The 14500 is too loose and rattles. I was thinking the extra diameter of the 18500 would resolve the problem as the flashlight battery compartment is considerably larger (more round) than the 14500.

Okay, am I now banned for life????

Not at all. Did the maker spec the battery at 14500? Seems odd they would miss by that much. Did the Tube have a cardboard or plastic insert?

Your diameters are:
14500 - 14mm
18500 - 18mm

Measure before spending.

17670 is another size slightly smaller but I've never read of it being used for vaping. I'd take a business card or two to shim the tube to the battery.

My Apex Alphas take the AW 17670 (or 2X 16340).
However, the 17670s do work in most of my 18650 devices.

OP,
If an 18mm battery fits...

Cheers
I

Nothing to be Embarrassed about. Some of us are Into Flashlights as well as e-Cigarettes.

As people have Mentioned, an 14500 and a 18500 Battery both have the same Nominal Voltages, 3.7 Volts. So if a 18500 will Physically fit into your Flashlight, then it should work fine.

As crxess said, I would suggest that you Measure the Inside tube of your flashlight before you but a 18500 Battery.

1mm is about .0394"

So the Inside of the Flashlight is going to have to be a tad Bigger than .709".

It's pretty much all been said. If it fits and you don't scrape the shrink off, then it should be fine. I have a number of flashlights that accept different battery sizes of the same voltage. It might be a good idea to check out the manufacturer's page to be on the safe side. You can also check out candlepowerforums (another very friendly forum) for more help.

I'm a Recovering Flashaholic.

I went thru a Period where I would buy el-Cheap-O Flashlights on e-Bay for nothing just for their Bodies. Then Gut them and put Better Emitters / Memory Mode Boards, Seals, Lens, etc in them.

I was 18 Seconds Away from Out Bidding some Newbie on e-Bay for another 26650 Flashlight from China when it Hit Me...

"Does a Person Really Need Five 26650 Flashlights when they have 11 18650's as Backups?"

LOL. I sometimes think about buying half-decent flashlights to gut them and make my own PV mods. Then I remember what happened with custom flashlights; titanium, copper, brass, one for each battery type and size, one for each occasion, backup of backup of backup and SHELF QUEENS!

OK, but the important question is: how do they vape?
