So we are about to order an Ultrasonic Cleaner to steep with, but were bringing home a friend's crock pot that got dropped. So the ceramic dish is broken, I am just wondering if any of you know if the crock pot is still usable for steeping without the ceramic? The lid fits fine on it still and it will still hold water. We just don't want to break anything...

Gosh I've never heard this one asked but I don't see any reason why you couldn't. If it holds water, why not? I would probably put it in a little ceramic dish in the water to be on the safe side. The metal might get a lot hotter than the ceramic pot did. I would definitely find a way to use it. But of course next time I mix, I'm going to put mine in a ziplock back with a rubber band tight around it and run it through a dryer cycle of clothes and see what that does. Hey, has heat and it shakes.

That sounds like a really bad idea as the aluminum liner has seams that could allow water to eventually leak and come in contact with the heating element. (Mine has a large rivet of sorts dead center in the base that helps to hold the interior and exterior together. Just the spot for water to get through) Considering they can be had for even 10 bucks on sale this sure as hell isn't work the risk of an electrical hazard.

So if that is a valid point, putting it in a ceramic bowl full of water would be just as good right? Just wondering so I can answer this question next time correctly.

Thanks guys :) So far it's holding water and working fine, but your points are all taken very well. I will check Goodwill since it seems like somebody has to have gotten rid of theirs at some point.

Words from a retired electronics tech are HELL NO!!! Water, metal, household electricity can lead quickly to fire or electrocution!!!

Go to Goodwill - That's the best place to watch for crock pots, ultrasonic cleaners, and food dehydrators - all are great for steeping. I bought 2 different UCs, and a brand new dehydrator - each for $6.00 Crock pots are about $3 - $5. Keep your eyes open...

For OP and Rattytat.......this right here!! Which is the same as Rick was saying, but this got the point across better. No way would I put water in the just the aluminum. Throw that out unless you find the same type of ceramic that it came with, and I doubt you will. As they said, check the 2nd hand stores. Even an older one without a removable ceramic would be fine and cheap.
