Cotton wool instead of wick?

I have just bought a kayfun 3. While looking through the forum on here I found a tutorial by Romelee here, http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tutorials/503153-kayfun-3-1-microcoil-cotton-guide.html . Can anyone tell me why cotton wool seems to be preferred over wick for building these?Also, is it just normal shop bought cotton wool being used? Many thanks in advance for your help

NO - the cotton IS the wick, not instead of a wick.
There are lots of different materials that can be used for a wick. Cotton, silica, and even steel mesh are popular. The good part is that you are free to choose whichever works best for you.

Cotton wool seems to draw up the e-liquid a lot better than the silica in my experience.
Also doesn't seem to add any flavour.

Shop bought is ok if it's organic, because in my mind who wants extra chemical ?
Be sure to boil it though if it's been whitened because it's usually done with hydrogen peroxide.

I use a style similar to Super-Shiny (Romelee) from AAEC. (We're forum mates...)
Last week I did a silica build and it was not as good in enough ways to convince me cotton wins on soaking up liquid and taste too.

Generally it is organic cotton, several drug store chains have it. Sterile 100% cotton was OK by me when I used it. It "wicks" better than silica, is easy to use and is near taste free. Some people use rayon, it wicks better than either cotton or silica, it is easy to use and has no discernible taste. Sally's Beauty Supply sells it as "Cellucotton" and for about $12 you cn get enough for your entire family to use for three generations. I have been convinced by this forum to make a switch to the rayon. I like it quite well (until the next latest and greatest comes wicking along). I hope this is helpful.

Thank you all for clearing that up for me . I cut my rebuilding teeth on the Vivi nova, so I've only had experience with silica wick. I'd never heard of anyone using cotton wool until I read through the forum. Ah well,off to the shop now to find some organic cotton wool then

Cotton absorbs faster, allows for better taste, and is less expensive than wick. Some people use all natural cotton balls other use a different type of cotton much like beauty salons use when giving perms or coloring.

Grim, if you want the best cotton there is then you need to get some Koh Gen Do japanese cotton. It comes in the form of pads which you divide in half. It is very easy to thread thru your coil and does not have any cotton taste. Just saying!!
