I've vaped off and on for almost a year now, mostly off. Reason for the "off" is every time I try to inhale I choke like crazy. I've tried multiple liquids, nicotine 9 mg, 12 mg, 18 mg. I choke on all of them. Could it be the Kanger Evod that's doing it? I'd hate to spend $$ on a higher end device and find its no different. Your input appreciated. Thanks.

I tried to post in new members, but says I have insufficient privileges to post there ???

Try it without any nic and work up from there.
If you have some PG or VG just dilute your existing bottles of e-liquids to weaken the nic strength.
Nic is different on analog cigs, I don't cough with analog cigs or cigars, but with e-liquids I do.

I was going to suggest the same thing - try lower nic levels. I smoked like a chimney (seriously) for 40+ years, but even so, I found I can't tolerate higher levels of nic in my vapor. Makes me cough and choke, BAD. I started at 18 on my EVOD, and that was way too high, so I dropped down to 12, which I could JUST manage, sparingly, but I felt like I wasn't getting enough nic because I couldn't vape it often enough. 6 to 8 was more comfortable. I'd still cough if I got a "strong" hit, though, even at those levels. I've since gone to sub-ohm tanks, and now my very highest nic level that I can tolerate is 2 mg. I can ALMOST handle 3, but seriously, not first thing in the morning. I have to condition my lungs before I try 3. So mostly I stick to 1 or 2, and in the evenings I switch to zero nic juice.

That might NOT be your problem, but try lowering your nic levels and see if it helps. You might find you need to vape more often, but if it's more pleasant, then who cares, right? ;) As long as you don't choke.

I think it might just be your draw technique....dont pull the way you would a cig.....theyre both totally different.

Dont purse your lips tight around the tip, just relax and keep them as loosely attached as possible only to the rim of the tip. Just practise pulling vapor into your mouth and exhaing it for a few times....dont inhale yet. Once you get used to how much vapor youre pulling, it will intuitively sort itself out.

I choked first time too.

I vaped 24mg for years on eGo and finally started to upgrade to VV/VW higher watt devices a couple of years ago. It wasn't long before I dropped to 18 to 12 to 6 and down to 3mg over a few months.

It's hard to find higher nic juices these days. Between the deeming regs and the move to low nic and higher wattage the market has changed.

Your atomizer may not be feeding juice fast enough to stay saturated. How often do you change the Evod coil head in your tank?

If you are direct lung hitting you might want to try mouth to lung.

Good point. I did MTL on the EVODS (can you even DO a direct lung hit with those? LOL!). But that would definitely make a difference, too.

Or you could try my way of MTN (mouth through nose) I actually very seldom pull the vapor down into my lungs.

Are you a fairly consistent smoker? i.e. several to a pack a day?

Vaping and Smoking are definitely different, and I struggled at first. Adjusting can be a little frustrating and is compounded by switching back and forth.

When you say Kanger Evod, I assume you mean Battery and Tank together(starter device) This is a Well designed simple Transition setup. Larger than an ecig, but not uncomfortable to handle or difficult to maintain.

50/50 or lower vg e-liquids flow best due to small coil/wick Design.
Air Flow is rather restricted, similar to a cigarette.
Coils should be replaced whenever Flavor falls off noticeably.

Inhaling should be done in a manor that the Power is applied about 1/2 to 1 second before inhaling.
Inhale should be Smooth and with less Draw force than a Cigarette(lighter pull) and for 4-6 seconds.
Power should be released 1/2 to 1 second before stopping inhale to prime Coil for next Draw.

Vapor is Denser than Smoke and of course more moist.

Practice is your best friend.
I have been surprised by many that will Cough, while testing, without actually pressing the power button. - again a Draw induced cough.

I would suggest 6mg for light smokers, 12mg for PAD smokers and 18mg or higher for Heavy Full flavor smokers.

Wishing you the best.

:)

You might want to experiment with pg levels, as well. I had a hard time when I started vaping. I was constantly coughing and getting headaches. Back then, 70pg/30vg was the norm. Got a tip off of here, and switched to Max vg. All those problems disappeared. Now I vape 70vg and up only. The clouds are a bonus.;)

Not sure if this will help you or not. Figured it was worth a shot to share it with you though.
Why You Cough When You Vape And How to Stop It!
Lack of Anesthetics
In addition, Chris Price of E-Cigarette Politics believes that tobacco smoke contains ingredients which are specifically designed to stop smokers from coughing. Chris said:

Essentially, this is why you can breathe in tobacco smoke when you can’t breathe in bonfire smoke too well, when they are basically the same thing: burning plant matter…. Some of the 9,600 ingredients identified to date are in there to make the smoke smoother, less irritating, and to prevent coughing.”

The absence of anaesthetics and antitussives in vaping could explain why you cough when you first try vaping.

Good luck to you!

I too seem to be sensitive at least somewhat to both PG and VG. I stick to a 50/50 blend for best results.

Most smokers need a higher level of nicotine when they first make the switch from smoking to vaping so I do not agree with low nicotine levels depending on the device that you are using. Especially if you are a heavy smoker. Going too low can lead to frustration and poor results.

If you are smoking and new to vaping a lot of people go into choking fits when they start. Chances are you may already be doing that from smoking. Then you introduce something new to a pair of "not happy" lungs from years or decades of smoking and - you have an insult to injury scenario.

You may have to just change your approach. I couldn't lung inhale anything when I started - didn't matter if it was PG or VG. (And I was long past the point of having multiple hacking fits per day from smoking so...) Don't lung inhale - treat it like a cigar. Somewhat open mouth pulls of vapor into your mouth and back of the throat and - stop. Exhaling out your nose will help you experience more of the feel of a cigarette.

This isn't all violets and unicorn farts - vaping is somewhat of an irritant. If you are smoking and changing over to vaping at the same that's a lot for your lungs to take on. It took me weeks to un-learn my deep lung inhale smoking technique and not treat vaping the same way. Smoking technique is a very unconscious thing after doing it for decades so you may have to work at not using a cigarette inhale when you start vaping. You can change up the technique later, but it simply sounds like your lungs need a break during the transition. I know mine did.

What pg/vg levels are the eliquids that you are currently using? When we were using Evods, my daughter and I found that anything from 50 pg/50 vg to 30 pg/70 vg worked quite well for us, whether we were using Kanger single coils or Kanger dual coils. Anything above 50 pg was way too harsh for us.
