Can you describe what a dry hit or failing/bad coil tastes like?

Google wasn't too much help, you guys are more reliable. :)

Prior to this thread I wrote what appeared to be a 10,000 word essay that I realized went way overboard so I deleted it all and am starting fresh.

Here is the scenario. I have an iclear 30 at 2.0 ohms, an MVP V2, and a nautilus mini which I acquired today from a local B&M. I am vaping a 20pg/80vg, 18mg nic liquid. Throughout the day I've been getting progressively muted to even bad flavor from both devices. Although both coils failing in line with each other is possible, it is on the unlikely side of things.

Now, instead of throwing a dozen possible scenarios at you, I think it would be easiest to start with a few little questions.

What does a dry hit or failing/bad coil taste like? Please describe it in great detail if possible so I can assess my situation. Are they different tastes? Is it a spicy, burny, peppery sort of taste? What can you compare it to?

Either I have some psychological issues that need addressing or something else is going on. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don't remember what a failing coil tastes like, but a dry hit to me tastes acrid/sour/burns in the throat in a bad way. When I used clearos with replaceable heads I changed them when I noticed a drop in performance/flavor, which usually meant they were gunked up.

A dry hit, also known as a burnt hit when it gets bad, tastes like ... Well, it's been a while since I've had one so I vaped an atty a bit dry. The flavor changes in a bad way, acrid comes to mind. It hits the back of your throat hard and is almost painful. I have had some burnt hits from hell and they were actually painful. Really, I'm not kidding. I once read a post from someone who had a really burnt hit and thought he had actually burnt his throat.

Failing/bad coils? That depends on what you mean by failing and bad. Coils and wicks gunk up from fried on juice. How long you can go before cleaning or replacing a head depends mostly on the juice you're using. Some gunk 10 times faster than others. Dark juices and sweet flavors are notoriously bad for that.

My main juice is both dark and sweet. I can get around 10 ml of juice past a coil and wick before I want to clean them. Some people who vape unflavored juice can get 150 ml in, there is that much variation.

Coils don't really go bad, in that they physically wear out, for quite a while.

progressively muted sounds like the opposite of a dry hit - flooded coil.
Common problem with new vapers using bottom coil clearomizers; drawing too hard tends to pull more liquid to the coil and it becomes flooded.

Hold the tank up to your air and fire the mod and listen to the sound of the coil firing.
A flooded coil makes a lower gurgling type of sound.
The right dampness gives a snap-crackle-pop
And an absolutely dry coil goes silent.

As for the taste of a dry coil, it's basically unmistakable; burning choking coughing .

Thank you all for the prompt replies, I'm still unsure as to what's going on though. I still need to do a bit of troubleshooting.

Here's a question. Tobacco juices: do they generally get sweeter as they steep, or does the sweetness tone down?

I've been vaping on the same 15 mil bottle for 6 days (idk how I did it either, WHILE quitting analogs no less.) When I first smelled and tasted the juice it had a mild but prominent maple flavor, with a tiny hint of vanilla in there I think, people would say it smelled sort of like warm maple syrup on pancakes when I vaped.

Now, I'm not sure if it was me getting acclimated to the flavor of the juice, its sweetness calming down, or some strange effect of the nicotine, who knows. So let's start with that question. Do tobacco juices become sweeter or more mild as they steep? I guess that applies for all juices as well however I haven't even tried any. Thank you all so much for your insight.

If you vape the same juice daily you will get vapers tongue. change it up once in a while. When you return to old flavor the flavor will be stronger. The longer the juice sits the more flavorful it will get. I leave the caps unscrewed to speed up the process. Its called steeping.

It tastes dry (as in no liquid) and/or it tastes burnt. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the cough your lungs out style but it's still bad enough. Sorry if this isn't exactly a figure of speech but I think it sums it ip. :)

As for your second question, the answer is it depends on the tobacco juices: some go less sweet, some go sweeter (I guess) and some remain basically the same. Juices are juices and differ in the same way, the fact that it's a tobacco flavour doesn't really change the logics.

You will definitely know cause you will cough and cough and the taste of bad pistachio is the best gotdang answer ever lol.. The wormy stuff stuck in the teeth is the worse part but with vaping that doesn't happen but the flavor and effect is lol..

A good way to get flavor back is to brush your teeth with toothpaste then rinse with baking soda water. Instant flavor returns unless you have really bad vapors tongue.. Then it takes some hydrogen peroxide gargle 1st then brush then gargle baking soda. By later that night all will return.. (should) lol Once you get seasoned, vpors tongue goes away and ya never get it again.. (fingers crossed) lol

dry hits for me smell/taste like burning plastic or something electrical that burnt... very sharp harshness to it...
and yes, as coil age, they build up a "carbony" gunk that mutes the flavor and acts like a barrier which keeps the juice from contacting the coil, this increases the opportunity of a dry hit since there is no fresh juice actually getting on the coil. The coil has to heat up the carbon build up first enuf to heat the juice to a vapor point. By then, the coil is burning the carbon/juice coating and yuck occurs.
